Beta-Carro Juice Recipe | Carrots, Apricots, Peaches

I had to try the Beta-Carro juice recipe because I bought so many apricots the last trip to the store. I love apricots and they produce a thick juice. You may have to add some water to this one. I think sparkling water would be great, but even purified water helps to thin this one out and doesn’t really take anything from the taste. That’s what I did.

Using my Omega J8004 masticating juicer I made this delicious recipe.

beta-carro juice recipeI always suggest people dilute the fruit juices, because of the sugar content. I’m careful about the quantity I drink at one time too and I’ve noticed in The Juicing Bible that some of the recipes for fruit juices says, “Serves 1” and I think it’s better to say “Serves 2”. I adjust for that in these articles.

If you’re like me, you’ll experience less of a sugar spike if you eat breakfast or some food with your fruit juices. If you have any medical conditions, please consult your healthcare professional. A phone call is all it takes. That said, fruit juice is great for fasting and cleanses!

Fresh Juice: Beta-Carro Juice Recipe

Serves 2

  • 3 carrots

  • 3 fresh apricots, pitted

  • 3 peaches, pitted

Using your juicer, juice the apricots alternating 1/2 of a carrot between each. Juice the peaches doing the same. I had to let my Omega J8004 run for a few minutes after I finished to make sure I got all of the juice out. There still was quite a bit of juicy pulp on the auger.

Update: Beta-carotene, like all carotenoids, is an antioxidant. An antioxidant is a substance that inhibits the oxidation of other molecules; it protects the body from free radicals. Free radicals damage cells through oxidation. Eventually, the damage caused by free radicals can cause several chronic illnesses. – Medical News Today

Health and Nutrition: Sprouts Protein

Sprouts, specifically alfalfa sprouts, that’s what I’m growing. I purchased the Victorio VKP1014 4-Tray Kitchen Seed Sprouter and started the day I got it. I used to love the texture and taste of it in sandwiches and salads, but where I live those tasty green morsels are hard to come by. And, I want my own, freshly grown-organic sprouts!

Recently I read an article on juicing them and that really peaked my interest! Can you imagine?sprouts

About Sprouts

I’ve read and heard for a long time that sprouts are very nutritional, but I never put that much emphasis on them. Not any longer. Today I’m particularly interested in the protein value of sprouts.  Now’s the time for a little more research.

What makes sprouts nutritious?

Sprouts are very nutritious, as they contain all the elements that a plant needs for life and growth. The simple process of sprouting brings out many enzymes in germinated seeds, legumes, and grains, making them easier to digest. It also increases the amounts and bioavailability of protein, vitamins and minerals, transforming them into nutrition powerhouses. Overall, sprouts provide excellent quality nutrients and, by weight, are the rich sources of an array of vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants. – Vegetarian Nutrition

sproutsI received a package of alfalfa seeds with my growing kit and I wanted to see exactly what the benefits of alfalfa sprouts are. After doing a little research I found that alfalfa contains 35% protein and are abundant in vitamins A, B, C, E and K. Alfalfa sprouts contain the  minerals calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium and zinc. Also carotene, chlorophyll, amino acids and trace elements. How awesome is that?

After reading some more I found that lentil sprouts are a good source of protein too. A 1-cup serving of fresh or cooked lentil sprouts contains about 7 grams of protein, according to USDA figures. Yabba-Dabba Doo! I want some of that! I’ll buy lentil seeds and grow them with my alfalfa.

So, if you’re like me and looking for the most nutritional foods out there, it appears to me that the good ole’ tasty sprouts that I used to get in my sandwiches are just the ticket. They’re also a good source of protein and it’s the kind of protein I can live with (I’m distancing myself from eating meat).

I’ve continued growing sprouts on and off since I got my growing kit. I like Certified Organic Alfalfa Sprout Seed -1 Lb – Handy Pantry Brand Seeds For: Salad Sprouts & Sprouting. Basically all spouts are delicious, so what ever seeds you get, grow and enjoy!

Thanks for reading and next I’ll share what I’ve learned from juicing this little, green, wonder food . So, what do you do with your sprouts? Put them on salads? Please share with us and happy juicing!

The Benefits of Juicing

Breville JE98XL Juice Fountain

Breville JE98XL Juice Fountain

The recommended daily servings of fruits and vegetables is somewhere between the number of 5 and 9 servings (depending on who you ask). I find it difficult to manage to eat only 5 servings per day and that’s one reason why I juice. Studies show, only 20 percent of Americans eat five or more daily servings of fruits and vegetables, and a mere 5 percent consume seven servings. When I juice I consistently get between 5 and 9 servings per day. This blog is designed to help you get the same benefit out of juicing and to live a happier and healthier life. So juice on! There’s No-Thing Better For You Body Than FRESH Fruit & Vegetable JUICE.

5 Quick Tips for Juicing

tips for juicingTips for Juicing

I’ve been juicing for years and have probably made as many mistakes as anyone, but juicing is really simple and easy to do. Once you get your own system down, you can really start enjoying the process of juicing. Here are some of my favorite tips for juicing.

Here are 5 quick tips for juicing:

1. Add some fruit to your greens to sweeten it up a bit and smooth out the taste. Personally I love apple. It doesn’t matter to me if it’s a granny smith apple or a red delicious apple, I love apples. I think apples work the best, but you could use a pear too. It makes the juice more enjoyable and boosts the vitamin and mineral content of green juice. When you start green juicing, you might need to do this just to make it palatable. I didn’t like green juice at first, but now I love it!

2. Use the freshest produce and use organic if possible. I know not everyone has access to organic produce, but it really is better for you. Organic produce will be pesticide and chemically free. Using the freshest will make a difference also. The fresher the produce the healthier and tastier your drinks will be. If you have access to a farmers market, use it. You won’t be sorry!

3. Leave the skins on when you juice. That’s where a lot of the nutritional value is. I peel my citrus fruits like oranges, but I leave the pith on. I use a peeler to do it quickly. Apples, carrots, grapes and the like I don’t peel at all. Cucumbers, it just depends if their waxy or not. Do it the way that suits YOU. Have fun, experiment and enjoy it.

4. Use a variety of ingredients. It’s best not to juice just fruits, because of the sugar content. If you’re diabetic, please consult your physician before juicing fruits. Work toward drinking as much green juice as you can. The greens are nutritionally the best for you. The fruits are especially good for an energy boost and cleanses. Just be careful about how much of them you juice and drink at one time.

5. Wash, scrub and rinse your fruits and vegetables. Not just because of chemicals and pesticide, but because it’s been handled by others. Buy a vegetable brush from my Amazon Associate Store. It’ll make you feel good 🙂

I hope these tips for juicing help you and remember have fun juicing!

Spring Cleanse Vegetable Juice with Asparagus, Cucumber and Tomato

Here’s a spring cleanse vegetable juice recipe. This one is good all year round.

This is an interesting recipe, because I’ve never juiced asparagus. Steamed asparagus is delicious and I have always loved cold cooked asparagus on salads, so juicing them should be good too. I had to try it.

Asparagus is a natural diuretic, which helps flush toxins from the body and cleanse the kidney.Spring Cleanse Vegetable Juice

I liked this recipe and it’s especially good over ice. I used a very large tomato and cucumber and could definitely taste them. Just a hint of lemon and a little asparagus flavor. Good vegetable juice! Try it if you like asparagus as I do.

Spring Cleanse Vegetable Juice Recipe

The Spring Cleanse Vegetable Juice comes from  – Juicing, Fasting, and Detoxing for Life: Unleash the Healing Power of Fresh Juices and Cleansing Diets. In the book it’s on page 291.

Makes 20+ ounces

  • 1 cucumber, peeled

  • 1 vine-ripened tomato

  • 8 asparagus stalks

  • 1/2 lemon peeled

Spring Cleanse Vegetable Juice

Asparagus is a brain booster: Another anti-aging property of this delicious spring veggie is that it may help our brains fight cognitive decline. Like leafy greens, asparagus delivers folate, which works with vitamin B12—found in fish, poultry, meat and dairy—to help prevent cognitive impairment. In a study from Tufts University, older adults with healthy levels of folate and B12 performed better on a test of response speed and mental flexibility. (If you’re 50-plus, be sure you’re getting enough B12: your ability to absorb it decreases with age.) Asparagus is packed with antioxidants: It’s one of the top ranked fruits and vegetables for its ability to neutralize cell-damaging free radicals. This, according to preliminary research, may help slow the aging process.  – Eatingwell.com

Spinach Carrot Apple Juice | Simple Recipes

As I’m writing this, I’m headed to the kitchen to make this recipe, spinach carrot apple juice. Spinach is becoming my favorite green vegetable. Great to juice and great to eat in salads or cooked.

I have some spinach leftover that I’m afraid is going to go bad, some carrots that are in the same condition and a big red delicious apple. So I’m juicing what’s available and later today I’m going shopping for some more fresh produce.

Spinach is a pretty good source of vitamin C and in a study I read about, spinach showed evidence of significant protection against the occurrence of aggressive prostate cancer. Good stuff, eh?

spinach carrot apple juiceCarrots have some good benefits too. Carrots are good for your vision and skin. Carrots are an excellent source of vitamin A. More good stuff for the body!

As far as apples go, did you ever hear the old saying, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.”? Apples are one of my favorite fruits and go well into just about any juicing recipe to add a little sweetness.

This is off the topic of juicing a little. Have you ever tried stewed apples? Occasionally I have a stewed apple in the morning, because in studying Ayurvedic medicine a while back I learned stewed apples stimulate regular bowel movements. There are other benefits too. What a way to start the day! Believe me stewed apples really work. Try it three days in a row and see how you like it.  Here’s a link to a simple recipe and directions.

Spinach Carrot Apple Juice

Makes 20 ounces – Best served over ice or chilled.

  • 2 lbs of carrots

  • 10 ounces of spinach

  • 1 large red delicious apple

Rich"s Go Green Smoothie

This is a simple green smoothie. I make this or something similar when I’m in a rush. Rich’s Go Green Smoothie. It’s healthy, easy and quick to make.

Why Go Green? Maca, maca gives it the blast as in nutriblast.

My Go Green Smoothie is so easy to make in the Nutribullet. I just love my Nutribullet Pro!, but if you don’t have one you can use a blender.rich

This recipe has just a few ingredients. My main ingredient is kale (organic). Kale rich in vitamin B6, vitamin K, vitamin A, vitamin C, manganese and copper to list a few. To boost things I add some maca and some ground flax seed.

First a couple of things. My shortcuts. 1. I use frozen fruit. Organic when I can find it. Yeah when I’m in a hurry I’ll use frozen 😉 2. Juice from a bottle. I buy the best I can find. Organic when I can find it. No preservatives and no sweeteners.

Rich’s Go Green Smoothie

richIngredients:

  • Kale – Buy organic. Fill the Nutribullet Pro cup to about 3/4.

  • Frozen fruit – 1/2 cup or one small hand full.

  • Maca – 1 tsp. No more than that because it will ruin the taste.

  • Ground flax seed – 1 Tbsp

  • Juice – Cranberry, 1 cup

  • Water – Fill to max line on the cup.

Extract for approximately 40 seconds or until smooth and enjoy.

If you’re looking for an energy boost, you’ll like this recipe. Maca powder is derived from a root that grows in the high altitudes of the Peruvian Andes and is known to be “Nature’s Viagra,” as well as a natural energy booster.

Rich’s Go Green Smoothie is especially good for women too because it includes cranberry juice and maca.

For women, maca decreases menopause symptoms, increases bone density and more.

Cranberry juice provides a number of important health benefits — especially for women. Cranberry juice is good for the prevention of urinary track infections, reduces the risk of breast cancer, enhances heart health and more. See the sources below.

You can find two of my main ingredients at a very good price on Amazon, maca and ground flax seed. You can also get a Nutribullet Pro there too. It’s the best price around that I can find. But of course I live in South Dakota 🙂

Try Rich’s Go Green Smoothie. Is this recipe for you? Let me know by commenting below.

Juice Fast And Protein | Will I Get Enough Protein?

How Do I Get Protein During My Juice Fast?

I hear that question often, and many people say to me they need to get their protein. I imagine the majority of people don’t know how they can possibly supply their body with enough protein while consuming only FRESH fruit & vegetable JUICE. There are many excellent raw sources of protein. See below.
protein

Not getting enough protein while juice fasting is a legitimate concern. Getting enough of any food source is important and protein is something our bodies require to thrive. Fret not people, raw, plant-based protein absolutely provides a person with more than enough protein to nourish the body. Ask any true Vegan!

Juicing

When juicing regularly or juice fasting you’re not starving your body. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. Your body is getting more nutrition that it’s probably ever received. Juicing breaks down the cells and concentrates the nutrients allowing your body to absorb more. You wouldn’t be able to eat even half of the raw fruits and vegetables you’ll be consuming on a juice fast. It’s just too much to chew and swallow.

Here’s a list of several raw sources of protein you can juice: Asparagus, Beet Greens, Broccoli, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Collard Greens, Kale, Mustard Greens, Spinach, Swiss Chard, Sprouts, Tomatoes and Turnip Greens. (Source)

Protein Levels

From LIVESTRONG.COM:

Blood protein levels remain constant throughout a prolonged juice diet. Proteins are synthesized from decomposed cells, notes Germany’s “fasting therapist”, Dr. Otto Buchinger, who founded several European health clinics. New cell growth is enhanced during a juice diet, as the body shifts protein and other stored nutrients to where they are needed. After a few days of consuming only liquids, your body will “autolyze,” or self-digest, cells and tissues which are diseased, damaged, aging or dead. The process has been called “a burning of rubbish” by Buchinger in his book, “Fasting: the Buchinger Method.”

Using a juice extractor unlocks essential nutrients in the fibers of fruits and vegetables, notes Ron Lagerquist, author of “Fasting to Freedom” and “Whole Foods & Healing Recipes.” Lagerquist maintains that a juice diet provides better rejuvenation than fasting on water, which often causes an unpleasant toxic crisis.

Reasons To Juice

reasons to juiceWhat are some good reasons to juice? Without a doubt it’s good for your body. FRESH fruit and vegetable juice will give your body the antioxidants, enzymes, vitamins and minerals it needs to heal, be stronger and feel better. FRESH juice contains more available nutrients and enzymes than chewed raw food.

Reasons To Juice

Phytonutrients

Here’s a reason to juice: Phytonutrients are natural compounds found in fruits and vegetables and have been proven to be beneficial to human health and help the body fight disease. Some claim they can slow the aging process by reducing the negative effects of aging. Nothing will keep you from getting older, but FRESH fruit and vegetable juice makes it easier. Phytonutrients protect you from high blood pressure, heart disease, osteoporosis, many forms of cancer, and a whole host of other illnesses. Phytonutrients also fight free radicals. Free radicals cause deterioration of our healthy cells. When we drink fresh juices with phytonutrients they will activate a group of enzymes that will go around and clean up free radicals in the body before they can do any harm. Just like antioxidants. Actually, many phytonutrients are anti-oxidant.

Carotenoids

Hamilton Beach Big Mouth Juice Extractor

Here’s another good reason to juice: Carotenoids also act like antioxidants in your body. Carotenoids provide the yellow, red and orange colors in fruits and vegetables. That’s why I always say make your meal colorful and when juicing do the same. That way you’re sure to get a balanced amount of these fabulous free radical fighters. There are many types of carotenoids: Alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, beta-cryptoxanthin, lycopene and lutein. They are good for your body!

People have lots of reasons to juice and new discoveries are being made constantly on the benefits of juicing and eating raw food. I would like to share them with you. If you haven’t already, please subscribe to this blog and receive notifications of new posts by email. Thank you for reading and Juice On!

Apple Fresh Fruit Juice Recipe

When I made my Apple Fresh Fruit Juice I used granny smith apples and the best red grapes I could find. This fresh fruit juice is absolutely delicious, but tart (sharp). Over ice it’s an excellent, refreshing morning drink to sip on and definitely a “wake me up” juice. If you prefer something sweeter, use a sweeter apple. As is, this is an awesome fruit juice and very easy to make. See below.

apple freshApple Fresh Fruit Juice Recipe

The Apple Fresh recipe comes from the book,  The Juicing Bible. This is a wonderful book and has many delicious recipes for juicing as well as smoothies. In addition it has an abundance of useful information on health conditions and healthy foods. I highly recommend this book.

The Apple Fresh Fruit Juice Recipe I show here has a slight modification. I used granny smith apples and I didn’t use the powdered ginseng as mentioned in The Juicing Bible. Maybe I’ll try the powdered ginseng (1/2 tsp.) the next time.

The recipe from The Juicing Bible isn’t specific regarding the apples. Granny smith apples are lower in sugar content and that’s why I try to use them. It’s a tangy taste too! For myself I love all apples. I mix them up sometimes and enjoy experimenting. This is an excellent morning drink and will get the body going. Juice and enjoy!

Serves 2 people

  • 3 apples (granny smith)

  • 1 cup of red grapes

  • 1/2 lemon (peeled)

apple fresh

UPDATE ON GRAPES:

The wealth of antioxidant nutrients in grapes is somewhat startling! In addition to providing us with conventional antioxidant nutrient like vitamin C and manganese, grapes are filled with antioxidant phytonutrients that range from common carotenoids like beta-carotene to unusual stilbenes like resveratrol, and the total number of different antioxidant nutrients in grapes runs well into the hundreds. – whfoods.com

Do you like tart fruit drinks?

Let’s look at a few juice cleanse recipes. I’m about to embark on a 48 hour juice cleanse or you could call it a juice fast (feast). This is a ritual of mine that I started performing regularly a few years ago. Actually my first juice cleanse was many years ago and I tried it with store bought juice. Yuck!

There you have some great recipes. According to the book we should be seeding the apples. However, I don’t believe it makes much difference. You could though, because it will only take a second or two if you’re using something like the Omega J8004 Juicer.

Next up, The 48 Hour Juice Cleanse. I can’t wait to write.

Dr Weil"s Anti-Inflammatory Diet Food Pyramid

I’m a big fan of Dr. Weil and have been for many years. I like his books, audiobooks, and especially his website which includes his anti-inflammatory diet. All of it is very interesting to me and very informative.  I respect his straight, no-nonsense talk about health. He always backs up what he says and my goal is to do the same. My articles are researched and my references are by respected authorities.

Anti-Inflammatory Diet

It is becoming increasingly clear that chronic inflammation is the root cause of many serious illnesses – including heart disease, many cancers, and Alzheimer’s disease. – Dr. Weil

  • Aim for variety.

  • Include as much fresh food as possible.

  • Minimize your consumption of processed foods and fast food.

  • Eat an abundance of fruits and vegetables.

Here’s a pyramid from Dr. Weil. It’s just some good information to pass along and I hope you find it useful. The bottom line: Stop eating refined, processed and manufactured food. Eat more fish and more fresh fruits and vegetables.

And let me add, if you have trouble getting the recommended servings of fresh fruits and vegetables, Juice!

omaca-3 nutribulletI really have been enjoying my NutriBullet Pro and Virginia has been too. If you’re following you know I picked one up before Christmas in a department store. A passerby said it was great and she also said she used it every day and loves it. So we bought one.

Virginia and I have been using the NutriBullet Pro in place of juicing. This adds a fresh new dimension to our juicing/blending lifestyle and I have to say I am impressed. It’s easy to do, there are a lot of delicious simple recipes and cleanup is a breeze.

The Omaca-3 gets it’s name from maca root powder. High in energy! Maca is rich in vitamin B vitamins, C, and E. It provides plenty of calcium, zinc, iron, magnesium, phosphorous and amino acids. Maca is widely used to promote sexual function of both men and women. It serves as a boost to your libido and increases endurance. At the same time it balances your hormones and increases fertility. So enjoy, I mean really enjoy, the Omaca-3!

The Omaca-3 recipe comes from the NutriBullet Pro  booklet. The booklet is found inside the box with the NutriBullet Pro. It claims to have “Life Changing Recipes”, like the Omaca-3, so we shall see.

So here’s a great recipe for you to try !

Berry Medley Fruit Juice Recipe

Strawberries, blueberries and raspberries…three of my favorites! This juice recipe uses them all. It’s so simple and I just love drinking this delicious recipe. I first tried this juice in 2012 and I decided to revive it again and give it it’s due. Berry Medley Fruit Juice is so healthy for our bodies and mind!

Blueberries, contain a wide variety of phytochemicals. Anthocyanins is what gives blueberries their wonderful blue color. Blueberries contain other phytochemicals which can improve memory.

About the ingredients in our juice Recipe – The heart-shaped silhouette of the strawberry is the first clue that this fruit is good for you. These potent little packages protect your heart, increase HDL (good) cholesterol, lower your blood pressure, and guard against cancer. They are among the top 20 fruits in antioxidant capacity and are a good source of manganese and potassium. Just one serving — about eight strawberries — provides more vitamin C than an orange. Berries in general are a good source of antioxidants called anthocyanins that help to strengthen our arteries ad help protect them from oxidative damage. Berries also contain an antioxidant called ellagic acid that is strongly associated with cancer prevention.

We thoroughly enjoyed our little breakfast together and especially Apple Blues, which brightened our morning.

Beetastic Punch - The Benefits Of Juicing Beets

juicing beetsWell, you know that juicing helps people experiment and try vegetables that they normally wouldn’t eat right? It certainly did that for me. I never use to eat ginger on anything, but now I use it quite often in my juice recipes. It took a little getting use to though. The same goes for beetroot.

Beetroot was another one I didn’t care for until juicing came into my life. I love beets now, but I didn’t start liking them until I started juicing.  We had beets occasionally with dinner when I was growing up. It was one of those vegetables that I just didn’t like as a kid. Kind of like broccoli. I would rather sit and stare at them for 20 minutes before taking one bite. I usually got away with it too.

After I started juicing I tried a beet in a juice recipe and loved it. They’re sweet, red and delicious. They turn any green juice red and just about anything else they touch too.  So if beets aren’t your thing, try them in a juice. You might just be surprised at how good they really do taste raw. Beets are a tremendous source of instant energy too.

Juicing Beets

Not only are beets a great boost to your physical well-being and a wonderful source of iron, studies have shown beets to be an immunity booster and guard against cancer, especially colon cancer. When you are juicing beets they contain ZERO trans fat and ZERO saturated fat. They are also low-calorie! Juicing beets gives you a boost in energy because of their carbohydrates, but unlike processed foods which are high in carbohydrates, beets will energize your body. Juicing beets can be regarded as body fuel.

Beets are famous for their ability to cleanse the blood and strengthen the gallbladder and liver. Beet juice is very concentrated, so a little goes a long way. Beet juice is sweet and delicious. Do you get a boost in energy drinking beet juice?

Here’s a good recipe for you to try:

Beetastic Punch

1 small Granny Smith apple (4–6 ounces), cored and cut into chunks

1/2 large cucumber

1/2 medium beet

2 medium carrots

1/2 inch piece of fresh ginger

Process all ingredients in your juicer.

Makes one 16-ounce glass.

Note to self: Beets turn everything inside your body pink. Don’t be freaked out when everything comes out pink. It just means the beets are working!

What’s your favorite recipe with beets?
