Rich"s Go Green Smoothie

This is a simple green smoothie. I make this or something similar when I’m in a rush. Rich’s Go Green Smoothie. It’s healthy, easy and quick to make.

Why Go Green? Maca, maca gives it the blast as in nutriblast.

My Go Green Smoothie is so easy to make in the Nutribullet. I just love my Nutribullet Pro!, but if you don’t have one you can use a blender.rich

This recipe has just a few ingredients. My main ingredient is kale (organic). Kale rich in vitamin B6, vitamin K, vitamin A, vitamin C, manganese and copper to list a few. To boost things I add some maca and some ground flax seed.

First a couple of things. My shortcuts. 1. I use frozen fruit. Organic when I can find it. Yeah when I’m in a hurry I’ll use frozen 😉 2. Juice from a bottle. I buy the best I can find. Organic when I can find it. No preservatives and no sweeteners.

Rich’s Go Green Smoothie

richIngredients:

  • Kale – Buy organic. Fill the Nutribullet Pro cup to about 3/4.

  • Frozen fruit – 1/2 cup or one small hand full.

  • Maca – 1 tsp. No more than that because it will ruin the taste.

  • Ground flax seed – 1 Tbsp

  • Juice – Cranberry, 1 cup

  • Water – Fill to max line on the cup.

Extract for approximately 40 seconds or until smooth and enjoy.

If you’re looking for an energy boost, you’ll like this recipe. Maca powder is derived from a root that grows in the high altitudes of the Peruvian Andes and is known to be “Nature’s Viagra,” as well as a natural energy booster.

Rich’s Go Green Smoothie is especially good for women too because it includes cranberry juice and maca.

For women, maca decreases menopause symptoms, increases bone density and more.

Cranberry juice provides a number of important health benefits — especially for women. Cranberry juice is good for the prevention of urinary track infections, reduces the risk of breast cancer, enhances heart health and more. See the sources below.

You can find two of my main ingredients at a very good price on Amazon, maca and ground flax seed. You can also get a Nutribullet Pro there too. It’s the best price around that I can find. But of course I live in South Dakota 🙂

Kale Cucumber Apple Juice | Simple Recipes

kale cucumber apple juiceThis Kale Cucumber Apple Juice recipe is very delicious. The cucumber cuts the strong flavor of the kale and the apple sweetens it just a little.

I was pleasantly surprised when I made this recipe this morning.

Kale is a superfood. I can’t say enough about it. I never liked kale before I started juicing so this is a big plus for me.

Cucumber is a good source of B vitamins and rehydrates the body. I hear cucumber is good for hangovers. If that’s the case this should be an excellent hangover cure.

Kale Cucumber Apple Juice – My Simple Recipes

Makes 20 ounces

  • 3 kale leaves

  • 1 large cucumber (I peel mine, unless organic)

  • 1 apple (red delicious)

kale cucumber apple juice

Selecting Kale for Juicing

  • To enjoy the health benefits of kale you should look for kale with firm, deeply colored leaves and moist and firm stems.

  • When you shop for kale it should be displayed in a refrigerated environment because warm temperatures will cause it to wilt. This will negatively affect its flavor.

  • Never pick leaves that look wilted for your juicing recipes. The kale leaves should not show any signs of browning nor have small holes.

  • The kale with smaller-sized leaves usually is more tender and have slightly better flavor than those with larger leaves.

  • To store, place kale in a plastic storage bag removing as much of the air from the bag as possible.

  • You can store it in the refrigerator for for up to 5 days.

  • When you are juicing kale leaves you should however note that the longer the leaves are stored, the more bitter it will taste when you juice it.

  • Always shop for kale that has been grown organically.

  • Rinse kale leaves under cold running water. – Juicing Benefits Toolbox

Eye Opener | Kale, Spinach, Carrot and Grapefruit

Yeeesss! I struck gold. The Eye Opener is the best kale and grapefruit recipe I’ve run across. The grapefruit makes a wonderful early morning green juice. It truly is an eye opener, but not too tangy.

I don’t know if it’s the kale that cuts the tangy flavor of the grapefruit or if it’s the grapefruit that smooths out the strong flavor of the kale, but whatever it is, it’s fantastic! Served best over ice.

Maybe it’s just the right combination and amount of ingredients that makes this juice so good.

It’s a simple recipe too. Just kale, spinach, carrot and a grapefruit. The grapefruit needs peeling, but that’s pretty easy. I’m used to peeling citrus fruit when juicing. Speaking of peelers, here’s a good one: OXO Good Grips Swivel Peeler.

This is a serious hit of carotene, essential for eye health and immunity.- The Big Book of Juices

eye openerEye Opener – The Big Book of Juices

The Eye Opener comes from  The Big Book of Juices: More Than 400 Natural Blends for Health and Vitality Every Day.  According to the Juice Recipe Builder, this recipe has 78 calories and it’s packed full of vitamins A, C, and K. What a wonderful vegetable based juice recipe.

Makes 10 ounces

  • 1 handful kale

  • 1 large handful spinach

  • 1 carrot

  • 1 grapefruit

NUTRIENTS

Beta-carotene, folic acid, vitamins B3, A, C and K. Calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium and sulphur.

This is an excellent immunity juice recipe. Try it over ice.

Carrot Deep Cleanser | Carrots, Beet, Kale and Apple

This is almost exactly like the Carrot Cleanser I previously wrote about. Both recipes are in the book The Big Book of Juices: More Than 400 Natural Blends for Health and Vitality Every Day, but the Carrot Deep Cleanser is better in my opinion.

carrot deep cleanserThe Carrot Deep Cleanser recipe didn’t make as much juice as I normally like, but it is very good. You can do like I did and add the 1/2 apple, 1/2 beet and a couple of more carrots to get 20 ounces.

If you are at all wary of having beet or kale juice, start with the Carrot Cleanser.

Kale, also known as borecole, is one of the healthiest vegetables on the planet. A leafy green, kale is available in curly, ornamental, or dinosaur varieties. It belongs to the Brassica family that includes cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage, collards, broccoli, and Brussels sprouts. One cup of chopped kale contains 33 calories and 9% of the daily value of calcium, 206% of vitamin A, 134% of vitamin C, and a whopping 684% of vitamin K. It is also a good source of minerals copper, potassium, iron, manganese, and phosphorus.

Carrot Deep Cleanser +

The plus (+) stands for more carrot, apple and beet.

Makes 14 ounces

  • 3 carrots

  • 1/2 apple

  • 1/2 beet

  • 1 stick celery

  • 3 large kale leaves

If you want more juice for your effort, add the 1/2 apple, 1/2 beet and a couple of more carrots. I think this tastes better and you’ll get about 20 ounces. Enough for two people or save some for later.

Carrot Cleanser | Carrot, Apple, and Kale Juice

The Carrot Cleanser comes from one of my favorite books, The Big Book of Juices: More Than 400 Natural Blends for Health and Vitality Every Day.

Even though I wouldn’t consider this a simple recipe, I wanted to try it. I’m used to making recipes with just a few ingredients and this one contains six ingredients. It also leaves me with halves, which I don’t care for.

However, using the halves, I stumbled on to an interesting juice combination. I juiced the leftover 1/2 apple and 3/4 beet (see below) and added 3 carrots. Easy recipe and tastes good. I think it’s better over ice.

When juicing you never know what you’re going to get when you try something new. These more complicated recipes are a little harder to make and require more preparation, but it’s worth the while when you consider the benefits of the juice. The juice recipes from The Big Book of Juices make me feel great.

carrot cleanserCarrot Cleanser

Any juice using beet or kale can take getting used to for the vegetable-juice initiate, but once you’ve had it, you can fully appreciate it’s cleansing properties.

I enjoyed the Carrot Cleanser. It does take a little getting used to, but after a few sips I really enjoyed it. It has a slight orange/tangy taste and I didn’t detect much of the kale. That’s a good thing for me :-) Overall, I’d say it’s worth trying.

Makes 16 ounces

  • 3 carrots

  • 1/2 apple

  • 1/2 orange

  • 1/4 beet

  • 1 stick celery

  • 2 large kale leaves

carrot cleanser

NUTRIENTS

Beta-carotene, folic acid, vitamin B3, B6 and C. Calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, sulphur.

This is an excellent detox juice recipe. Try it!

Update – I’ve discovered steamed Kale. I know this doesn’t have to do with juicing, but I thought I would share it since it’s so delicious. I just started steaming Kale since I’ve been growing my own.

Kale can provide you with some special cholesterol-lowering benefits if you will cook it by steaming. The fiber-related components in kale do a better job of binding together with bile acids in your digestive tract when they’ve been steamed. When this binding process takes place, it’s easier for bile acids to be excreted, and the result is a lowering of your cholesterol levels. Raw kale still has cholesterol-lowering ability—just not as much.

Apple Cleanser Juice Recipe | Apples, Kale and Beet

Wonderful! Delicious! Healthy! The Apple Cleanser is a beautiful red sweet juice that’s full of nutrients and great for detoxifying the body.

You won’t want to miss this recipe. It has five ingredients, but is so easy to make. I used my Omega J8004  and from start to finish it took me about 20 minutes. That includes washing my produce and cleaning up afterwards.

With the Apple Cleanser you get beta-carotene, folic acid, vitamin B3, vitamin C, calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium and sulphur.

apple cleanserApple Cleanser My Way

The Apple Cleanser comes from one of my favorite books, The Big Book of Juices: More Than 400 Natural Blends for Health and Vitality Every Day. However the recipe doesn’t specify some things. For instance I used a few of the stems and leaves of the beetroot. Also, I didn’t peel my cucumber. It was a homegrown cucumber. Whatever you do with those two things I’m sure it will come out wonderful

The fruitiness of the apples offsets the more challenging taste of the greens to produce this beautifully red detoxifying juice.

Makes 20 ounces

  • 2 apples ( I used gala)

  • 2 kale leaves

  • 1 stick celery

  • 1/2 long cucumber (I didn’t peel mine, garden fresh)

  • 1/2 beet ( beetroot, I used a few stems and leaves)

apple cleanser

This is an excellent detox juice recipe. Did you ever wonder what do do with the other halves of the leftover produce? I juiced them. 1/2 of beetroot combined with 1/2 cucumber isn’t so bad and it produced 8 ounces for me. Try it!

Update 8/26/2014 – Popular Types of Kale

Curly Kale is probably the most recognizable kale sold in bunches at your local grocery store. It is usually bright or dark green or purple in color, has tight ruffled leaves and fibrous stalks that can be difficult to chop, but easy to tear if fresh. It has a noticeable pungent flavor with peppery and bitter qualities, so seek out younger looking leaves for less bitterness.

Lacinato Kale (also known as Dinosaur) is a kale variety that features dark blue-green leaves with a slightly wrinkled and firm texture. The hearty leaves of Dino Kale are tall and narrow and retains its firm texture even after it has been cooked. It has a slightly sweeter and more delicate taste than the curly kind with its flavor described as deep and earthy, but not so bitter with an almost nutty sweetness.

Red Russian Kale has flat, fringed leaves that resemble big oak leaves, large arugula leaves, or the outer leaves of a mature cabbage. Its leaves can have a red tinge and a reddish-purple tinge to the stems, and has a great flavor that is described as sweet and mild with a little bit of pepperiness. Although Red Russian Kale is one of the sweetest kales, be sure to remove as much of the stems as possible before cooking. It has incredibly tough and woody fibrous stems that are difficult to chew and swallow and could cause stomach upset.

Redbor Kale is beautiful and dark red in color that can look a deep purple, slightly resembles a tightly curled rainbow chard near the tops of its leaves. While this type of kale is edible, it also crosses over to being an ornamental plant. It is so pretty, why not grow it as a garden decoration and pick leaves as you need! Redbor makes a great addition to a meal, or even as edible plate decor. – OneGreenPlanet.org

Jolly Green Giant

Okay this is a great juicing recipe, very beneficial. You can see that by the first two ingredients, kale and spinach. Kale is one of the healthiest foods on the planet. Furthermore, spinach has shown significant protection against the occurrence of aggressive prostate cancer.

So here it is, the Jolly Green Giant Juicing Recipe! Enjoy!

Seasonal: Green Carrot Ginger Juice | Reboot With Joe

reboot with joeGreen Carrot Ginger Juice

Ingredients:
2″ (5 cm) of ginger root (you may add more ginger if you like)

1 medium cucumber

4 carrots

3 stalks kale (Tuscan cabbage)

1/2 pear

This recipe comes to you via the Reboot With Joe website. I love visiting his website and getting new juicing recipes. Also featured on Reboot With Joe, are people with inspirational stories. It just makes me want to juice every day and twice on Sundays.

Drinking cucumber juice helps you reach your recommended daily intake of vitamin K (Kale also has plenty of vitamin K). This vitamin helps you build strong bone tissue and nourishes your kidneys. It also plays an important role in blood clotting — it activates proteins that trigger blood coagulation, so that you can stop bleeding after suffering tissue damage. Consuming cucumber juice helps to fight the effects of vitamin K deficiency, which can include nosebleeds, bruising and bleeding gums.

Another great source of recipes is a book I have called, The Juicing Bible. It has a lot of fantastic recipes and so much good information about juicing and healthy food. It’s an awesome book and if you’re juicing regularly, it’s a must read.

carrot deep cleanserThe Carrot Deep Cleanser recipe didn’t make as much juice as I normally like, but it is very good.

  • 1/4 beet

Jolly Green Giant Juicing Recipe With Kale And Spinach

Jolly Green Giant

Okay this is a great juicing recipe, very beneficial. You can see that by the first two ingredients, kale and spinach. Kale is one of the healthiest foods on the planet. It is also a good source of minerals copper, potassium, iron, manganese, and phosphorus.grape & green

So how about spinach? It’s got flavonoids — a phytonutrient with anti-cancer properties abundant in spinach and  flavonoids have been shown to slow down cell division in human stomach and skin cancer cells. Furthermore, spinach has shown significant protection against the occurrence of aggressive prostate cancer.

So here it is, the Jolly Green Giant Juicing Recipe! Enjoy!

Update 8/18/2014 – Kale is a hardy, cool-season green that is part of the cabbage family. It grows best in the spring and fall and can tolerate all fall frosts. Kale can be used in salads or as a garnish and is rich in minerals and vitamins A and C. – Almanac.com

You can plant kale anytime from early spring to early summer. If you plant kale late in the summer you can harvest it from fall until the ground freezes in winter.
