Juice Fast And Protein | Will I Get Enough Protein?

How Do I Get Protein During My Juice Fast?

I hear that question often, and many people say to me they need to get their protein. I imagine the majority of people don’t know how they can possibly supply their body with enough protein while consuming only FRESH fruit & vegetable JUICE. There are many excellent raw sources of protein. See below.
protein

Not getting enough protein while juice fasting is a legitimate concern. Getting enough of any food source is important and protein is something our bodies require to thrive. Fret not people, raw, plant-based protein absolutely provides a person with more than enough protein to nourish the body. Ask any true Vegan!

Juicing

When juicing regularly or juice fasting you’re not starving your body. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. Your body is getting more nutrition that it’s probably ever received. Juicing breaks down the cells and concentrates the nutrients allowing your body to absorb more. You wouldn’t be able to eat even half of the raw fruits and vegetables you’ll be consuming on a juice fast. It’s just too much to chew and swallow.

Here’s a list of several raw sources of protein you can juice: Asparagus, Beet Greens, Broccoli, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Collard Greens, Kale, Mustard Greens, Spinach, Swiss Chard, Sprouts, Tomatoes and Turnip Greens. (Source)

Protein Levels

From LIVESTRONG.COM:

Blood protein levels remain constant throughout a prolonged juice diet. Proteins are synthesized from decomposed cells, notes Germany’s “fasting therapist”, Dr. Otto Buchinger, who founded several European health clinics. New cell growth is enhanced during a juice diet, as the body shifts protein and other stored nutrients to where they are needed. After a few days of consuming only liquids, your body will “autolyze,” or self-digest, cells and tissues which are diseased, damaged, aging or dead. The process has been called “a burning of rubbish” by Buchinger in his book, “Fasting: the Buchinger Method.”

Using a juice extractor unlocks essential nutrients in the fibers of fruits and vegetables, notes Ron Lagerquist, author of “Fasting to Freedom” and “Whole Foods & Healing Recipes.” Lagerquist maintains that a juice diet provides better rejuvenation than fasting on water, which often causes an unpleasant toxic crisis.

Health and Nutrition: Sprouts Protein

Sprouts, specifically alfalfa sprouts, that’s what I’m growing. I purchased the Victorio VKP1014 4-Tray Kitchen Seed Sprouter and started the day I got it. I used to love the texture and taste of it in sandwiches and salads, but where I live those tasty green morsels are hard to come by. And, I want my own, freshly grown-organic sprouts!

Recently I read an article on juicing them and that really peaked my interest! Can you imagine?sprouts

About Sprouts

I’ve read and heard for a long time that sprouts are very nutritional, but I never put that much emphasis on them. Not any longer. Today I’m particularly interested in the protein value of sprouts.  Now’s the time for a little more research.

What makes sprouts nutritious?

Sprouts are very nutritious, as they contain all the elements that a plant needs for life and growth. The simple process of sprouting brings out many enzymes in germinated seeds, legumes, and grains, making them easier to digest. It also increases the amounts and bioavailability of protein, vitamins and minerals, transforming them into nutrition powerhouses. Overall, sprouts provide excellent quality nutrients and, by weight, are the rich sources of an array of vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants. – Vegetarian Nutrition

sproutsI received a package of alfalfa seeds with my growing kit and I wanted to see exactly what the benefits of alfalfa sprouts are. After doing a little research I found that alfalfa contains 35% protein and are abundant in vitamins A, B, C, E and K. Alfalfa sprouts contain the  minerals calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium and zinc. Also carotene, chlorophyll, amino acids and trace elements. How awesome is that?

After reading some more I found that lentil sprouts are a good source of protein too. A 1-cup serving of fresh or cooked lentil sprouts contains about 7 grams of protein, according to USDA figures. Yabba-Dabba Doo! I want some of that! I’ll buy lentil seeds and grow them with my alfalfa.

So, if you’re like me and looking for the most nutritional foods out there, it appears to me that the good ole’ tasty sprouts that I used to get in my sandwiches are just the ticket. They’re also a good source of protein and it’s the kind of protein I can live with (I’m distancing myself from eating meat).

I’ve continued growing sprouts on and off since I got my growing kit. I like Certified Organic Alfalfa Sprout Seed -1 Lb – Handy Pantry Brand Seeds For: Salad Sprouts & Sprouting. Basically all spouts are delicious, so what ever seeds you get, grow and enjoy!

Thanks for reading and next I’ll share what I’ve learned from juicing this little, green, wonder food . So, what do you do with your sprouts? Put them on salads? Please share with us and happy juicing!

Organic Is Better Than Conventionally Grown Food

Organic Fruits and Vegetables

Is organic really better than conventionally grown food? Of course it is! Recent studies prove it.

Run by the USDA, organic certification audits the process of food production, handling and packaging. A farmer who obtains this strictly controlled USDA certification must be able to prove that no synthetic chemicals were on their farm. Everything that goes onto the plants — fertilizer, insecticides, etc. — must be from a stringent list of acceptable items. This is all audited for compliance, both at the paperwork level (showing purchase receipts, for example) and physically at the farm.

Organic Certification

At the food formulator and packing level, organic certification means a very stringent process for tracking raw materials is followed.

Both farmers and food packers are audited once a year by a USDA-approved organic certifier. This includes an on-site inspection which covers detailed requirements including cleaning solutions for machinery and even rodent control. Toxic rat poisons, for example, are not allowed to be used in a certified organic facility.

In contrast to organic food production, other operations can spray potentially harmful chemicals on crops in the field, including chemicals with heavy metals. Food packing and handling can take place in a warehouse that is fumigated with toxic chemicals. There are no requirements that food batches be tracked or tested for possible contamination.

Because of the requirements of organic certification, organic foods consistently test far lower in synthetic chemicals, and of course genetically modified foods are not allowed to be labeled “organic” at all.

Organic Foods Are More Nutritious

Breville JE98XL Juice Fountain

Organic foods are higher in nutrients. The largest study to date to examine the nutrient content of organic food has found that organic is generally more nutritious than conventionally grown produce. The four-year study led by Professor Carlo Leifert of Newcastle University is known as the Quality Low Input Food Project, and it found that organic fruits and vegetables contained as much as 40 percent higher levels of antioxidants, which are believed to reduce the risk of heart disease and many cancers. Organics also had higher levels of beneficial minerals such as zinc. And milk from organically-fed herds had antioxidant levels up to 90 percent higher than milk from conventional herds.

The study looked at fruit, vegetables and animals raised and grown on adjacent organic and conventional sites on a 725-acre farm attached to Newcastle University, and at other European sites as well.

The bottom line: We still need to eat more fruits and vegetables! Juicing is a great way to do just that.”There’s No-Thing Better For You Body Than FRESH Fruit and Vegetable Juice!

A Natural Energy Drink

PRIME Juicers Store
If you're like me you get up in the morning and want something to drink. I used to run to the coffee maker, but these days (being more health conscious) I get into the kitchen and make a morning juice. It's easy! It's actually easier for me to make juice and clean up quickly than it is to cook a breakfast. And juicing is nutritionally much better for you. Here's a quick natural energy drink to get you going in the morning.

Ingredients:
1 lemon (mostly peeled)
1 orange (mostly peeled)
1 pineapple spear
3 watermelon wedges (minus rind)

This is a great starter drink and don't forget to drink plenty of water. Water is essential, but this drink is easy to make and delicious to drink. Have fun and juice on!

5 Quick Tips for Juicing Fruits And Vegetables

Here are some juicing tips:

1. Add some fruit to your greens to sweeten it up a bit and smooth out the taste. Personally, I use just a half of an apple sometimes. It makes the juice more refreshing and boosts the vitamin and mineral content of my green juice.

2. Use the freshest produce and use organic if possible. I know not everyone has access to organic produce, but it really is better for you. Organic produce will be pesticide and chemically free. Using the freshest will make a difference also. The fresher the produce the healthier and tastier your drinks will be. If you have access to a farmers market, use it. You won't be sorry!

3. Leave the skins on when you juice. That's where a lot of the nutritional value is. I don't leave the entire rind on my oranges. I use a peeler to do it quickly, but leave a little rind on for the benefit. Apples, carrots and the like I don't peel at all. Cucumbers, it just depends. Do it the way that suits YOU. Have fun and enjoy it. When juicing lemons I'll also leave a little rind on. My girlfriend likes me to remove the green leaves off of strawberries because it changes the taste. I can' really tell though.

4. Use a variety of ingredients. It's best not to juice just fruits, because that could end up being a lot of sugar and if you're diabetic, please consult your physician before juicing fruits. Work toward drinking as much green juice as you can. The greens are nutritionally the best for you. The fruits and root vegetables are especially good for a good energy boost. Just be careful about how much of them you juice.

5. Always, ALWAYS wash and scrub your fruits and vegetables. Not just because of chemicals and pesticide, but because it's been handled by others. Buy a vegetable brush from my aStore. It'll make you feel good :-)

I hope this helps and remember have fun juicing!

It Started As a Gift

I received my first juicer a couple of years ago as a gift from my son on Father's Day. I got into it right away and started juicing apples, oranges, lemons, pineapples, strawberries, grapefruit, wheat grass, watermelons, tomatoes, carrots, cucumbers, beets, kale, broccoli, and a whole lot more. I knew nutritionally it'd be good for me and my overall health would improve. I juiced for myself, family, friends and loved one's. It's great fun and there's nothing better than FRESH fruit and vegetable juice for the body. I have lots of recipes and information about juicing, weight loss, nutrition and natural health, so I hope you'll join me and follow this page. If you don't have a juicer yet, go to my store (see below) and pick one up that fits your budget. You won't be sorry! And please remember to click the "Subscribe" button in the right hand pop-out menu. Thanks! - Richard (Rich) Donahue
