Improve your health today! Get started juicing FRESH fruits and vegetables. It's great fun and there's nothing better than FRESH fruit juice and vegetable juice for the body. I have lots of recipes and information about juicing, so I hope you'll join me and follow this blog. You won't be sorry!
Even though I wouldn’t consider this a simple recipe, I wanted to try it. I’m used to making recipes with just a few ingredients and this one contains six ingredients. It also leaves me with halves, which I don’t care for.
However, using the halves, I stumbled on to an interesting juice combination. I juiced the leftover 1/2 apple and 3/4 beet (see below) and added 3 carrots. Easy recipe and tastes good. I think it’s better over ice.
When juicing you never know what you’re going to get when you try something new. These more complicated recipes are a little harder to make and require more preparation, but it’s worth the while when you consider the benefits of the juice. The juice recipes from The Big Book of Juices make me feel great.
Carrot Cleanser
Any juice using beet or kale can take getting used to for the vegetable-juice initiate, but once you’ve had it, you can fully appreciate it’s cleansing properties.
I enjoyed the Carrot Cleanser. It does take a little getting used to, but after a few sips I really enjoyed it. It has a slight orange/tangy taste and I didn’t detect much of the kale. That’s a good thing for me Overall, I’d say it’s worth trying.
Makes 16 ounces
3 carrots
1/2 apple
1/2 orange
1/4 beet
1 stick celery
2 large kale leaves
NUTRIENTS
Beta-carotene, folic acid, vitamin B3, B6 and C. Calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, sulphur.
This is an excellent detox juice recipe. Try it!

Update – I’ve discovered steamed Kale. I know this doesn’t have to do with juicing, but I thought I would share it since it’s so delicious. I just started steaming Kale since I’ve been growing my own.
Kale can provide you with some special cholesterol-lowering benefits if you will cook it by steaming. The fiber-related components in kale do a better job of binding together with bile acids in your digestive tract when they’ve been steamed. When this binding process takes place, it’s easier for bile acids to be excreted, and the result is a lowering of your cholesterol levels. Raw kale still has cholesterol-lowering ability—just not as much.

The Benefits of Juicing
Breville JE98XL Juice Fountain
The recommended daily servings of fruits and vegetables is somewhere between the number of 5 and 9 servings (depending on who you ask). I find it difficult to manage to eat only 5 servings per day and that’s one reason why I juice. Studies show, only 20 percent of Americans eat five or more daily servings of fruits and vegetables, and a mere 5 percent consume seven servings. When I juice I consistently get between 5 and 9 servings per day. This blog is designed to help you get the same benefit out of juicing and to live a happier and healthier life. So juice on! There’s No-Thing Better For You Body Than FRESH Fruit & Vegetable JUICE.
Wow! Here’s a great recipe for you. The Sweet Pear Sensation comes from The Healthy Juicer’s Biblewritten by Farnoosh Brock.
I love pear in my juices and this one incorporates pear nicely with apple, lemon, celery and ginger. There’s just a hint of celery flavor and ginger in this one. I use very small amounts of ginger in my recipes because I think the Omega J8004 really squeezes out the ginger remarkably well. Too much ginger can ruin a juice for me.
I hope you enjoy this very delightful juice. Try some sparkling water with this, you might be surprised.
Sweet Pear Sensation
Makes 20 ounces
2 small pears, any kind
1 medium sweet apple ( I used Red Delicious)
2-4 celery stalks ( I used 3)
1/2 lemon ( I peel mine)
A small chunk of ginger
Update: The Health Benefits of Pears
Blood pressure: Pears have anti-oxidant and anti-carcinogen glutathione which help prevent high blood pressure and stroke.
Cancer prevention: The high vitamin C and copper content act as good anti-oxidants that protect cells from damages by free radicals.
Cholesterol: The high content of pectin in pears make it very useful in helping to lower cholesterol levels.
Colon health: When not juicing, eat the pear whole for its precious fiber that are highly beneficial for your colon health.
Constipation: The pectin in pears is diuretic and have a mild laxative effect. Drinking pear juice regularly helps regulate bowel movements.
Energy: You can get quick and natural source of energy from pear juice, due largely to its high amounts of fructose and glucose.
Fever: The cooling effect in pear is excellent in relieving fever. Best way to bring a fever down quickly is by drinking a big glass of pear juice.

I made this recipe this morning for Virginia (Health Juice Fanatic @healthyjuicers). Most of the recipes I’ve been making lately are enough for two people. The Pink Orchard Berry Buster is a delicious fruit juice recipe that I got out of The Big Book of Juices.
“With some 405 recipes for fruit and vegetable juices, smoothies, and quenchers, this newly updated and expanded edition of Natalie Savona’s essential kitchen guide to juicing now offers health-conscious readers even more. A clever indexing system sorts the juices by key ingredients, by nutrients, and by health benefits.”
I really like how the book is organized and I think you’ll like it too. I can just skim the outer page edges for what I’m looking for, ie. Fruit Based Juices – Apple, Fruit Based Juices – Grapefruit, Fruit Based Juices – Orange and so on. Smart!
Pink Orchard Berry Buster with a Fizz!
I like adding sparkling water to this one, but no matter how you drink it, it’s great! I love the taste of combining apples and strawberries. I used red delicious apples and some sweet ripe strawberries. Try this one, you won’t be sorry. It’s extremely easy to make.
Strawberries are very low in Saturated Fat, Cholesterol and Sodium. And… they are a very good source of Vitamin C and Manganese.
Makes 22 ounces
3 apples
2 good handfuls of strawberries ( you may substitute any red berry such as raspberries)
If you have a juice recipe you’d like to share on our website, please contact me. I’ll be sure to give credit where credit is due. As always, thanks for reading and happy juicing!
Juicing fresh fruits and vegetables will deliver to your body the vitamins you need. Juicing cucumbers is one such example, providing key nutrients and other health benefits — and it can even assist you in weight loss.
Cucumbers are a good source of B vitamins and cucumbers contain 95% water. They help keep your body hydrated and help your body eliminate toxins. I’ve heard claims that cucumber juice is even more beneficial in hydrating your body than water, but don’t forget to drink plenty of water throughout the day. Water is essential for your overall health.
Cucumber is also good for your skin and hair. That’s why many of the beauty products claim to contain cucumber. In addition, cucumbers contain lariciresinol, pinoresinol, and secoisolariciresinol. Research shows these three lignans have a connection with reduced risk of several cancer types, including breast cancer, ovarian cancer, uterine cancer and prostate cancer.
Cucumber is also known to be good for diabetics and to lower cholesterol levels. So if you want more energy, to get rid of toxins, lower your cholesterol and have beautiful hair and skin, then you should be putting some cucumber in your juice. Have fun juicing and cheers to your health!
Is organic really better than conventionally grown food? Of course it is! Recent studies prove it.
Run by the USDA, organic certification audits the process of food production, handling and packaging. A farmer who obtains this strictly controlled USDA certification must be able to prove that no synthetic chemicals were on their farm. Everything that goes onto the plants — fertilizer, insecticides, etc. — must be from a stringent list of acceptable items. This is all audited for compliance, both at the paperwork level (showing purchase receipts, for example) and physically at the farm.
Organic Certification
At the food formulator and packing level, organic certification means a very stringent process for tracking raw materials is followed.
Both farmers and food packers are audited once a year by a USDA-approved organic certifier. This includes an on-site inspection which covers detailed requirements including cleaning solutions for machinery and even rodent control. Toxic rat poisons, for example, are not allowed to be used in a certified organic facility.
In contrast to organic food production, other operations can spray potentially harmful chemicals on crops in the field, including chemicals with heavy metals. Food packing and handling can take place in a warehouse that is fumigated with toxic chemicals. There are no requirements that food batches be tracked or tested for possible contamination.
Because of the requirements of organic certification, organic foods consistently test far lower in synthetic chemicals, and of course genetically modified foods are not allowed to be labeled “organic” at all.
Organic Foods Are More Nutritious
Breville JE98XL Juice Fountain
Organic foods are higher in nutrients. The largest study to date to examine the nutrient content of organic food has found that organic is generally more nutritious than conventionally grown produce. The four-year study led by Professor Carlo Leifert of Newcastle University is known as the Quality Low Input Food Project, and it found that organic fruits and vegetables contained as much as 40 percent higher levels of antioxidants, which are believed to reduce the risk of heart disease and many cancers. Organics also had higher levels of beneficial minerals such as zinc. And milk from organically-fed herds had antioxidant levels up to 90 percent higher than milk from conventional herds.
The study looked at fruit, vegetables and animals raised and grown on adjacent organic and conventional sites on a 725-acre farm attached to Newcastle University, and at other European sites as well.
The bottom line: We still need to eat more fruits and vegetables! Juicing is a great way to do just that.”There’s No-Thing Better For You Body Than FRESH Fruit and Vegetable Juice!
Wonderful! Delicious! Healthy! The Apple Cleanser is a beautiful red sweet juice that’s full of nutrients and great for detoxifying the body.
You won’t want to miss this recipe. It has five ingredients, but is so easy to make. I used my Omega J8004 and from start to finish it took me about 20 minutes. That includes washing my produce and cleaning up afterwards.
With the Apple Cleanser you get beta-carotene, folic acid, vitamin B3, vitamin C, calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium and sulphur.
Apple Cleanser My Way
The Apple Cleanser comes from one of my favorite books, The Big Book of Juices: More Than 400 Natural Blends for Health and Vitality Every Day. However the recipe doesn’t specify some things. For instance I used a few of the stems and leaves of the beetroot. Also, I didn’t peel my cucumber. It was a homegrown cucumber. Whatever you do with those two things I’m sure it will come out wonderful
The fruitiness of the apples offsets the more challenging taste of the greens to produce this beautifully red detoxifying juice.
Makes 20 ounces
2 apples ( I used gala)
2 kale leaves
1 stick celery
1/2 long cucumber (I didn’t peel mine, garden fresh)
1/2 beet ( beetroot, I used a few stems and leaves)
This is an excellent detox juice recipe. Did you ever wonder what do do with the other halves of the leftover produce? I juiced them. 1/2 of beetroot combined with 1/2 cucumber isn’t so bad and it produced 8 ounces for me. Try it!
Update 8/26/2014 – Popular Types of Kale
Curly Kale is probably the most recognizable kale sold in bunches at your local grocery store. It is usually bright or dark green or purple in color, has tight ruffled leaves and fibrous stalks that can be difficult to chop, but easy to tear if fresh. It has a noticeable pungent flavor with peppery and bitter qualities, so seek out younger looking leaves for less bitterness.
Lacinato Kale (also known as Dinosaur) is a kale variety that features dark blue-green leaves with a slightly wrinkled and firm texture. The hearty leaves of Dino Kale are tall and narrow and retains its firm texture even after it has been cooked. It has a slightly sweeter and more delicate taste than the curly kind with its flavor described as deep and earthy, but not so bitter with an almost nutty sweetness.
Red Russian Kale has flat, fringed leaves that resemble big oak leaves, large arugula leaves, or the outer leaves of a mature cabbage. Its leaves can have a red tinge and a reddish-purple tinge to the stems, and has a great flavor that is described as sweet and mild with a little bit of pepperiness. Although Red Russian Kale is one of the sweetest kales, be sure to remove as much of the stems as possible before cooking. It has incredibly tough and woody fibrous stems that are difficult to chew and swallow and could cause stomach upset.
Redbor Kale is beautiful and dark red in color that can look a deep purple, slightly resembles a tightly curled rainbow chard near the tops of its leaves. While this type of kale is edible, it also crosses over to being an ornamental plant. It is so pretty, why not grow it as a garden decoration and pick leaves as you need! Redbor makes a great addition to a meal, or even as edible plate decor. – OneGreenPlanet.org

I really like this new book. I think one the most interesting things I’ve found in this book, Juicing for Life: A Guide to the Benefits of Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Juicing, is that during a juice fast Cherie Calbom presents a few unusual ideas. Not really unusual in my mind, but probably to a lot of those hard core juicers out there.
1. Cherie says, it’s okay to dilute any or all of these juices. I’ve always said that I think it’s a good idea to dilute fruit juice. I don’t do it all of the time, it just depends on how I feel. Sometimes I even dilute my vegetable juice if it’s thick or too strong.
2. Cherie also says vegetable broths can be drunk as well in the juice fast. She uses fresh vegetables and simmers them in hot water, removing the vegetables later and adding some seasoning. Great idea!
3. If you’re just too hungry and feel that it can’t go on any longer, Cherie says, don’t hesitate to modify the fast by adding fresh raw vegetables. Another wonderful idea.
It makes sense to me that if you don’t think you can stand it any longer (maybe you’ve gone 12 hours) to eat a few fresh vegetables to get you by instead of breaking the fast. This isn’t a competition and the more of these juice fasts you complete the easier it gets.
4. Another thing that I agree with her on is the duration of a juice fast. If you’re going it alone, don’t go for more than 5 days. It’s just good sense in my mind. Why overdo it by trying to go 30 days? Like I said, this isn’t a competition and if you’re in it to lose weight, there’s a better way than juice fasting for 30 days. Try this book for one!
We’re talking about a lifetime here. Changing old habits and juicing for life!

Juice Fast – Lunch Day 2
Noon- Spicy Cantaloupe Shake – 1/4 inch slice ginger root, 1/2 cantaloupe. Makes 12 ounces. Push ginger through juicer with cantaloupe. You can juice the cantaloupe with or without the rind. the rind is very nutritional. When juicing cantaloupe with the rind, thinly cut the very outer netted skin off. It should be orange, but with a slightly green tint. Delicious! This one is spicy too 😆
Mid Afternoon – Ginger Ale – 1 lemon wedge, 1/4 inch slice ginger root, 1 medium bunch green grapes, Sparkling water. Juice lemon. Push ginger through juicer with grapes. Pour juice into ice filled glass. Fill glass to top with sparkling water. Makes 16 ounces.
Juice Fast – Dinner
5:00 PM – My own recipe. My Emerald- A beautiful emerald drink with 1 small bunch parsley, 1 large cucumber peeled, 2 celery stalks, 1 bunch kale, 1/4 wedge lemon and 1 granny smith apple.
Later on I’ll have some more chamomile tea. Don’t forget, drink plenty of purified water when fasting. It’s great to stay hydrated and flush those bad toxins out.
Words of caution: Diabetics should seek a doctors approval before trying a juice fast. You can fast from 1 to 5 days anytime you like, but if you fast for longer than 5 days, I recommend you seek a heath care professionals supervision.
Watch for my next article on the 48 hour juice cleanse results.

Sprouts, specifically alfalfa sprouts, that’s what I’m growing. I purchased the Victorio VKP1014 4-Tray Kitchen Seed Sprouter and started the day I got it. I used to love the texture and taste of it in sandwiches and salads, but where I live those tasty green morsels are hard to come by. And, I want my own, freshly grown-organic sprouts!
Recently I read an article on juicing them and that really peaked my interest! Can you imagine?
About Sprouts
I’ve read and heard for a long time that sprouts are very nutritional, but I never put that much emphasis on them. Not any longer. Today I’m particularly interested in the protein value of sprouts. Now’s the time for a little more research.
What makes sprouts nutritious?
Sprouts are very nutritious, as they contain all the elements that a plant needs for life and growth. The simple process of sprouting brings out many enzymes in germinated seeds, legumes, and grains, making them easier to digest. It also increases the amounts and bioavailability of protein, vitamins and minerals, transforming them into nutrition powerhouses. Overall, sprouts provide excellent quality nutrients and, by weight, are the rich sources of an array of vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants. – Vegetarian Nutrition
I received a package of alfalfa seeds with my growing kit and I wanted to see exactly what the benefits of alfalfa sprouts are. After doing a little research I found that alfalfa contains 35% protein and are abundant in vitamins A, B, C, E and K. Alfalfa sprouts contain the minerals calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium and zinc. Also carotene, chlorophyll, amino acids and trace elements. How awesome is that?
After reading some more I found that lentil sprouts are a good source of protein too. A 1-cup serving of fresh or cooked lentil sprouts contains about 7 grams of protein, according to USDA figures. Yabba-Dabba Doo! I want some of that! I’ll buy lentil seeds and grow them with my alfalfa.
So, if you’re like me and looking for the most nutritional foods out there, it appears to me that the good ole’ tasty sprouts that I used to get in my sandwiches are just the ticket. They’re also a good source of protein and it’s the kind of protein I can live with (I’m distancing myself from eating meat).
Thanks for reading and next I’ll share what I’ve learned from juicing this little, green, wonder food . So, what do you do with your sprouts? Put them on salads? Please share with us and happy juicing!
Over the next few weeks I’m going to be writing articles on health and nutrition. These of course will be tied in with juicing since I’m a strong proponent of integrating juicing into a healthy lifestyle.
What is processed food? Processed food is food found in stores that has been prepared and stored for consumers. Products like canned or frozen foods are processed foods. White bread and even some whole wheat bread is considered processed food. Condiments like ketchup, barbeque sauce and salad dressings are processed foods and of course fast food establishments serve processed foods. Processed foods are products that have been cooked or altered from their natural state so they can be stored long term resulting in nutrient deficient food.
One of the first things I did years ago was to quit drinking soda pop. This included diet soda. I stopped cola or anything that is a sugary processed drink. My kids helped me with that. They started this healthy change first and I followed. Thank goodness for smart children!
The study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition discovered some frightening facts that should make us all swear off diet drinks and products.
Diet sodas raised the risk of diabetes more than sugar-sweetened sodas!
Women who drank one 12-ounce diet soda had a 33 percent increased risk of type 2 diabetes and women who drank one 20-ounce soda had a 66 percent increased risk.
Women who drank diet sodas drank twice as much as those who drank sugar- sweetened sodas because artificial sweeteners are more addictive and are hundreds to thousands of times sweeter than regular sugar.
The average diet soda drinker consumes 3 diet drinks a day.
Processed Food is Unhealthy
When food is processed, nutrients are lost, including fiber. Some products may be fortified or enriched to compensate for the lost nutrients, but fiber is not always added back to foods and the fortification or enrichment is not as beneficial as the natural whole food.
Sodium, added sugars and/or fat may be added during processing. Avoid anything loaded with sodium, sugar, fats, artificial flavoring, chemicals and additives. Read the Nutrition Facts Label and Ingredient List when buying processed foods. You may be surprised by the amount of sodium and sugar. Processed foods are linked to obesity, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and other illnesses. Food processing may also alter food in ways that might increase the risk of cancer. Minimize your consumption of processed food and of course, fast food.
Here are a few to stay away from:
Cupcakes
Frozen dinners
Hot dogs
Gummy candy
Chips (read the label)
Soda pop
5 Condiments to avoid or use less of
Mayonnaise – Commercially prepared mayonnaise is loaded with fats.
Sour Cream – Commercially prepared sour cream contains lots of fillers and preservatives.
Ranch Dressing – Read the label. Much of what is on the label bears little resemblance to food.
Ketchup – If you use commercially prepared ketchup you are getting a lot of high fructose corn syrup which quickly builds your daily sugar intake.
Barbeque Sauce and Steak Sauce – Again, not much that goes into these sauces can be identified as real food.
Is All Processed Food Unhealthy?
Generally speaking, no. Here are a few that technically are processed, but otherwise nutritious:
100% whole grain, nuts, barley, quinoa
Canned beans
Frozen fruit and vegetables
Nut butter without added sugar or sodium
Veggie burgers
Frozen wild salmon
Plain greek yogurt
100% whole grain bread
What About Juicing?
I don’t consider fresh fruit and vegetable juice to be processed. I use fresh fruits and vegetables from the supermarket, or my garden. I don’t add anything to my juices unless it’s natural and I don’t store my juices for very long. I’ve found juicing to be very healthy and it helps me to get more fresh fruits and vegetables in my diet.
I made this recipe this morning for Virginia (Health Juice Fanatic @healthyjuicers). Most of the recipes I’ve been making lately are enough for two people. The Pink Orchard Berry Buster is a delicious fruit juice recipe that I got out of The Big Book of Juices.

Okay, so I’m about to embark on a 48 hour juice cleanse or you could call it a juice fast (feast). This is a ritual of mine that I started performing regularly a few years ago. Actually my first juice cleanse was many years ago and I tried it with store bought juice. Yuck!
After the holidays is a great time to cleanse. I’ve found all of that holiday food just doesn’t digest well and it still may be lingering in my colon. Who knows what’s in there 😕
Evening Regulator – 2 apples, 1 pear. Alternate pushing apple and pear slices through juicer.
Cherie’s Cleansing Cocktail – 1/4 inch slice ginger root, 1 beet, 1/2 apple, 4 carrots (greens removed). Push ginger, beet and apple through juicer with carrots.
Spring Tonic – Handful of parsley, 4 carrots (greens removed), 1 garlic clove, 2 stalks celery. Bunch up parsley and push through juicer with carrots, garlic and celery.
Suggested Juice Cleanse Recipes For Migraine Headache
Spicy Cantaloupe Shake – 1/4 inch slice ginger root, 1/2 cantaloupe. Push ginger through juicer with cantaloupe.
Ginger Hopper – 1/4 inch slice ginger root, 4-5 carrots greens removed, 1/2 apple. Push ginger through juicer with carrots and apple.
Waldorf Salad – 1 green apple, 1 stalk celery. Push apple and celery through juicer.
Suggested Juice Cleanse Recipes For Motion Sickness
Ginger Hopper – 1/4 inch slice ginger root, 4-5 carrots greens removed, 1/2 apple. Push ginger through juicer with carrots and apple.
Ginger Fizz – 1/4 inch slice ginger root, 1 apple, Sparkling water. Push ginger through juicer with apple. Pour juice into ice filled glass. Fill glass to top with sparkling water.
Ginger Ale – 1 lemon wedge, 1/4 inch slice ginger root, 1 medium bunch green grapes, Sparkling water. Juice lemon. Push ginger through juicer with grapes. Pour juice into ice filled glass. Fill glass to top with sparkling water.
There you have some great recipes. According to the book we should be seeding the apples. However, I don’t believe it makes much difference. You could though, because it will only take a second or two if you’re using something like the Omega J8004 Juicer.
Next up, The 48 Hour Juice Cleanse. I can’t wait to write.
Thanks for visiting Prime Juicers and remember, “There’s no-thing better for your body than fresh fruit and vegetable juice!”
When I made my Apple Fresh Fruit Juice I used granny smith apples and the best red grapes I could find. This fresh fruit juice is absolutely delicious, but tart (sharp). Over ice it’s an excellent, refreshing morning drink to sip on and definitely a “wake me up” juice. If you prefer something sweeter, use a sweeter apple. As is, this is an awesome fruit juice and very easy to make. See below.
Apple Fresh Fruit Juice Recipe
The Apple Fresh recipe comes from the book, The Juicing Bible. This is a wonderful book and has many delicious recipes for juicing as well as smoothies. In addition it has an abundance of useful information on health conditions and healthy foods. I highly recommend this book.
The Apple Fresh Fruit Juice Recipe I show here has a slight modification. I used granny smith apples and I didn’t use the powdered ginseng as mentioned in The Juicing Bible. Maybe I’ll try the powdered ginseng (1/2 tsp.) the next time.
The recipe from The Juicing Bible isn’t specific regarding the apples. Granny smith apples are lower in sugar content and that’s why I try to use them. It’s a tangy taste too! For myself I love all apples. I mix them up sometimes and enjoy experimenting. This is an excellent morning drink and will get the body going. Juice and enjoy!
Serves 2 people
3 apples (granny smith)
1 cup of red grapes
1/2 lemon (peeled)
UPDATE ON GRAPES:
The wealth of antioxidant nutrients in grapes is somewhat startling! In addition to providing us with conventional antioxidant nutrient like vitamin C and manganese, grapes are filled with antioxidant phytonutrients that range from common carotenoids like beta-carotene to unusual stilbenes like resveratrol, and the total number of different antioxidant nutrients in grapes runs well into the hundreds. – whfoods.com
Do you like tart fruit drinks?
As always, thanks for reading and happy juicing!

The first time I took a shot of wheatgrass I thought I was going to gag! So why would I ever want to grow wheatgrass? Refer back to my last post, ABC’s Of Juicing Wheatgrass: Benefits Of Wheatgrass. I must admit, I just didn’t do it right the first time, or the second time for that matter. It took some time and experimentation, but I have a few good recipes now. It’s not hard to grow wheatgrass for juicing and it can be done indoors or outside with the proper seeds, a growing tray, some soil, water and a little sunlight. You can even buy a wheatgrass growing kit to make things easier.
Grow Wheatgrass
The kit even has instructions, but if you don’t want a kit, you can buy the seeds and use what you have around the house to grow wheatgrass. I’ll show you how.
In addition to the seeds you’ll need soil to grow wheatgrass. I buy organic soil at my local garden store. It has worked fine for me in the past. You can also just use some soil from your garden. My garden has compost made from my juicing pulp. It is excellent!
Trays are next. You could buy a couple of 10″x10″ trays (no drain holes) and these work great indoors and there are larger trays (with holes), 21″x11″x2″ that I use outdoors. I found my large trays at a nursery and the gentleman let me have them for free. So you could try that before buying some. A local nursery might have everything you need and give you trays to grow wheatgrass in for free.
To grow wheatgrass indoors I suggest using a small tray (10×10) or something similar in size. You’ll need one cup of seeds. Let them soak overnight in water. If you’re using a large tray, 2 cups of seeds should be enough. You’ll want to completely cover the soil in a layer of seeds. I found this unusual, but that’s how it works.
Photo A
Prepare your tray with soil and then take the seeds that have been soaking and spread them out on the soil. They lay on top of the soil, uncovered by the soil. See photo A. Then take a couple of paper towels and layer them over the seeds. This is to water them. Spray (soak) the paper towels with water. See photo B.
Photo B
Now all they need is a little light. Surprisingly, (at least to me) it doesn’t require a lot of sunlight to grow wheatgrass. I put mine on a plant cart and have it sitting near the window. There’s no direct sunlight there. Water (spray) the paper towel down occasionally so it doesn’t get dry. My house is dry, so I have to do this 3 or 4 times a day for the first few days. When growing it outdoors, I put it in a mostly shaded area, but it does get direct sunlight in the morning. Too much direct sun might kill it. When I grow wheatgrass outdoors I watch it carefully so that it doesn’t burn up.
Photo C
After a few days you’ll notice the seeds sprouting. See Photo C. Leave the paper towels on, just keep them wet. Mine usually start to push the paper towels up after 4 or 5 days and then I remove the paper towels.
Continue to water the soil in the tray. I use a spray bottle when the sprouts are just coming up and a pitcher or hose as it grows higher. Water it once a day to keep the soil damp at the roots. The tray I use indoors doesn’t have holes in the bottom, so I have to be careful I don’t add too much water . When growing wheatgrass outdoors (it’s hot here in the summer) I can water until it seeps through the bottom of the tray and it’ll just drip to the ground.
Harvesting Wheatgrass
The wheatgrass will be ready to harvest when it’s 5 to 7 inches high. If it gets too tall it won’t taste good when it’s juiced. It’ll be too strong or bitter. It’s better to cut earlier than too late. Trust me, it’s harsh when it’s grown for too long.
I take mine outside on the back deck to cut it, because the grass goes everywhere. I use grass shears to cut mine. Cut the grass off near the soil, about an inch up. It’ll have no problem coming back for a second time.
Note: Watch out for mold. I haven’t had any trouble with mine except when growing indoors in a planter, but if it does get mold you can wash it off before you juice it. And if you have a wheat or grass allergy, check with your healthcare professional before drinking wheatgrass juice.
There are of course different ways of doing things, but this is how I’ve done it in the past and it works for me. It always grows fine and I usually grow too much. I encourage you to experiment. Like my grandmother used to say, “There’s more than one way to skin a cat.”
I have beautiful, nutritious wheatgrass for my juicer whenever I want it. If you have any suggestions, please feel free to comment. Have you grown wheatgrass? How do you like it?
In the next post I’ll go over how I juice the wheatgrass with my Omega J8004 juicer and I’ll have a couple of recipes for you. Thanks again for reading and happy juicing.
The Emerald Deluxe also comes from The Healthy Juicer’s Bible written by Farnoosh Brock. This is another recipe I made before going on vacation, hoping to get the post done before taking off, but to no avail. It has a wonderful, deep, green (emerald) color. I love dark, emerald-green juices. When I drink them I can just feel the good, powerful nutrients entering my blood stream. Sounds crazy huh? Just try this recipe and use your imagination.

I can just taste the ginger and cucumber. Absolutely a beautiful color and you can certainly tell how it got its name.
I use my Omega J8004 juicer and get plenty of fantastic, healthy juice from this recipe.
Makes 24 ounces
2-3 cups of baby or regular spinach
3-4 stalks of celery
3-4 small Persian cucumbers (I used what was available)
1 cup green or red grapes
1 large Granny Smith apple
a small piece of ginger (careful, very strong stuff)
UPDATE: Spinach and other green vegetables contain chlorophyll which has shown to be effective at blocking the carcinogenic effects of heterocyclic amines which are generated when grilling foods at a high temperature. Spinach is high in vitamin A, which is necessary for sebum production to keep hair moisturized. Vitamin A is also necessary for the growth of all bodily tissues, including skin and hair. Spinach and other leafy greens high in vitamin C are imperative for the building and maintenance of collagen, which provides structure to skin and hair.

Strawberries, blueberries and raspberries…three of my favorites! This juice recipe uses them all. It’s so simple and I just love drinking this delicious recipe. I first tried this juice in 2012 and I decided to revive it again and give it it’s due. Berry Medley Fruit Juice is so healthy for our bodies and mind!
Blueberries, contain a wide variety of phytochemicals. Anthocyanins is what gives blueberries their wonderful blue color. Blueberries contain other phytochemicals which can improve memory.
About the ingredients in our juice Recipe – The heart-shaped silhouette of the strawberry is the first clue that this fruit is good for you. These potent little packages protect your heart, increase HDL (good) cholesterol, lower your blood pressure, and guard against cancer. They are among the top 20 fruits in antioxidant capacity and are a good source of manganese and potassium. Just one serving — about eight strawberries — provides more vitamin C than an orange. Berries in general are a good source of antioxidants called anthocyanins that help to strengthen our arteries ad help protect them from oxidative damage. Berries also contain an antioxidant called ellagic acid that is strongly associated with cancer prevention.

The ingredients in the Berry Medley Fruit Juice recipe:

2 cups of blueberries
1 and a 1/2 cup of raspberries
Wash thoroughly and juice. This berry juice is loaded with antioxidants.
