Power Juicer Pro Review

Okay, I grew up watching Jack Lalanne on TV. I remember seeing him when I was a kid and thinking, “man, that guy is strong.” Little did I know that someday he’d be selling juicers on TV. I think he was a very special individual who really cared about people. That’s just my opinion. I never met him, but I’m sure lots of people think the same thing about him. He just came across to me that way. I don’t own one of these juicers yet, but I hope to someday (my juicer was a gift from my son and I won’t give it up just yet). I have this juicer in my Amazon Associate Store for three or four reasons. 1. I like Jack Lalanne. 2. It has good reviews (solid 3.5 out of 5 stars) and solid sales statistics. 3. Shipping is FREE. I believe in this product and if you’re not happy with it, you can return it. See one review below and click on the picture above to view the product page and more reviews.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What’s this?)

This review is from: Jack Lalanne PJP Power Juicer Pro Stainless-Steel Electric Juicer (Kitchen)

I have been juicing for years with a few different cheap brand names. They were ok but very difficult to clean and very loud. I like to make my juice early in the morning before I go to the gym and it would sometimes wake up my neighbors if I did it too early. Many times I had to juice after the gym because it was so loud. The first thing that I noticed with the Power Juicer Pro is that it is super quite. Secondly it is pretty easy to clean. Thirdly, the machine is just beautiful. And lastly, the juice is much finer and cleaner than juice made from much cheaper machines. If you are serious into juicing and you do it everyday this is the machine to get. If you juice once in awhile you might want to get the cheaper Jack Lalanne plastic models. But beware that the plastic juicers are harder to clean and often get stained by the carrots. I hope that this review will be helpful to some. Happy juicing!!!

Juicing Myth: Juicing Is Bad

Here’s a juicing myth for you: “Juicing is bad because you lose the fiber when you juice fruits and vegetables.” – You get fiber through many other foods. You can also add back in some of the pulp to your juice. I’m not saying just Juicing Fruits and Vegetablesjuice. I’m saying juice in moderation to supplement your body with the vitamins and nutrients it needs from fresh fruits and vegetables. Your meals should also include lightly cooked vegetables, raw fruit and legumes.

High Fiber Foods

  1. Split Peas

  2. Lentils

  3. Black Beans

  4. Lima Beans

  5. Broccoli

  6. Brussels Sprouts

  7. Raspberries

  8. Blackberries

  9. Avacado

  10. Pears

Squash that juicing myth!

According to the Department of Agriculture, 90 percent of the antioxidant action in fruit is in the juice, not the fiber. In my experience juicing is one of the healthiest, quickest and most delicious ways to help get the body back on track and maintain optimum health. Juicing concentrates the nutrients found in fruits and vegetables, extracting them from fiber—a job usually undertaken by your digestive system. You would have to eat gobs of fruits and vegetables to get the same level of concentrated vitamins and nutrients in one glass of juice.

I’m a strong advocate of getting enough fiber each day, but I wouldn’t discount juicing because it extracts the fiber much in the same way I wouldn’t discount aerobic exercise because it’s hard on  joints and cartilage. Moderation is key! The benefits for juicing far outweigh any negative aspects. Juicing is very good for your body so JUICE ON!

Juicing Tips for Beginners

Are you ready to try juicing? It’s not hard and it doesn’t take a lot of time, especially if you have some help.

Juicing is a great way to get you daily servings of fruits and vegetables if you’re a person on the go. Use the healing properties of food and improve your health today with juicing!

Let’s get started.

Juicing Tips for Beginners #1

Juicing Tips for Beginners #1

Selecting your juicer. Are you going to be juicing leafy greens like spinach, kale and lettuce? I recommend you do, because those ingredients are very nutritious. The best type of juicer for leafy greens is a masticating juicer like the Omega J8004. It juices fruit great too. The other type of juicer is a centrifugal juicer. That’s the type I started out with. In the beginning I juiced a lot of carrots, apples, oranges, pineapple, and grapefruit. Lets not forget watermelon! My centrifugal worked great but I outgrew it after about a year. It just didn’t do a very good job on leafy greens, so I felt I was wasting too much. Along came my Omega J8004 and I haven’t stopped juicing since.

Recommendations for juicers:

Masticating – Omega J8004 Nutrition Center Commercial Masticating Juicer (Best overall in my opinion)

Masticating Vertical –Omega VRT330S 80RPM Masticating Juicer (Choose the VRT350 for a heavy duty screen, but at a higher cost)

Centrifugal – Breville JE98XL Juice Fountain Plus 850-Watt Juice Extractor (Good all around juicer, lowest price, but not good for leafy greens)

Juicing Tips for Beginners #2

Once you have a juicer, find delicious recipes. Keep them simple at first and make one’s that you know you’ll like. You can experiment with powerful ingredients like garlic and cilantro later. There are so many websites with so many recipes it’s hard to know which to choose from. That’s why I recommend getting a book on juicing and juicing recipes. When I started, I started simple. I had some free software that gave me some excellent suggestions. You can find it here.

Once I had exhausted the software I started buying books. I also found a few good simple recipes on websites, but I was cautious. Many are so complicated that I knew I didn’t want to make them and many have ingredients that are way too hard or impossible to find. Below are a few good books that will help you get started.

Before going to the grocery store, use your list of recipes and make a grocery list of what you’ll need. This will simplify things. Buy organic when possible and buy the freshest produce. If you’re able to, grow your own. That’s the best way!

Juicing Tips for Beginners #3

Let’s get juicing! Prepare and area for juicing and preparing your produce. My juicer sits close to my sink and garbage disposal. I also sometimes use a colendar for rinsing.

To wash your produce all you need is fine-grain sea salt and water! First, wash the fruit or vegetable with water. Prepare the solution in a large bowl (or sink) by mixing one teaspoon of sea salt to each cup of water and stir it to dissolve the salt. Soak your produce for two minutes. (Scrub with a vegetable brush) Rinse the produce under fresh water, pat dry.

Cut up your produce for your juicer. Mine needs to be cut up fairly small since I have a narrow chute (Omega J8004).

When juicing, alternate between hard and soft produce. This will help keep it from clogging.

If you have leftovers, like I almost always do, store it in airtight mason jars, then refrigerate. You can keep them up to 24 hours and it’ll still be fresh. I’ve found that the juice I make in my Omega J8004 stores longer, and tastes better longer than what I make in my Breville JE98XL.

That it for juicing tips for beginners. Simple enough huh? Have fun juicing!

Reasons To Juice

reasons to juiceWhat are some good reasons to juice? Without a doubt it’s good for your body. FRESH fruit and vegetable juice will give your body the antioxidants, enzymes, vitamins and minerals it needs to heal, be stronger and feel better. FRESH juice contains more available nutrients and enzymes than chewed raw food.

Reasons To Juice

Phytonutrients

Here’s a reason to juice: Phytonutrients are natural compounds found in fruits and vegetables and have been proven to be beneficial to human health and help the body fight disease. Some claim they can slow the aging process by reducing the negative effects of aging. Nothing will keep you from getting older, but FRESH fruit and vegetable juice makes it easier. Phytonutrients protect you from high blood pressure, heart disease, osteoporosis, many forms of cancer, and a whole host of other illnesses. Phytonutrients also fight free radicals. Free radicals cause deterioration of our healthy cells. When we drink fresh juices with phytonutrients they will activate a group of enzymes that will go around and clean up free radicals in the body before they can do any harm. Just like antioxidants. Actually, many phytonutrients are anti-oxidant.

Carotenoids

Here’s another good reason to juice: Carotenoids also act like antioxidants in your body. Carotenoids provide the yellow, red and orange colors in fruits and vegetables. That’s why I always say make your meal colorful and when juicing do the same. That way you’re sure to get a balanced amount of these fabulous free radical fighters. There are many types of carotenoids: Alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, beta-cryptoxanthin, lycopene and lutein. They are good for your body!

People have lots of reasons to juice and new discoveries are being made constantly on the benefits of juicing and eating raw food. I would like to share them with you. If you haven’t already, please subscribe to this blog and receive notifications of new posts by email. Thank you for reading and Juice On!

Juice Fast – 48 Hour Juice Cleanse Morning Day 2

On day two of my juice fast I woke up a little bit later than usual. It’s Sunday and I don’t have to work today. I prefer doing my juice fasts on days that I don’t work. It just makes things go smoother.

Immediately after waking I drink a tall glass of cool purified water. Just to get things going. Then I read and start to prepare for juicing my breakfast. This morning I think I’ll have my Energy Shake and a little Orange/Carrot Juice. See recipes below.

From the book Juicing for Life: A Guide to the Benefits of Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Juicing: “Bulking agents such as psyllium seed husks are used commonly as mucilaginous bulk laxatives. One or two teaspoons can be added to a glass of juice once or twice a day. This can be a very helpful aid to elimination during the juice fast (cleansing fast).”

Juice Fast – Breakfast Day 2

8:00 AM – Energy Shake – Handful parsley, 4-6 carrots, greens removed, parsley sprig for garnish. Bunch up parsley and push through juicer with carrots. Garnish with sprig of parsley. Makes approx. 8 ounces. – Orange/Carrot Juice – 2 oranges, 1 carrot, greens removed. Push oranges through juicer with carrot pieces alternating between the two. Makes approx. 10 ounces.

juice fast - orange-carrotjuice fast - energy shake

Juice Fast – Mid Morning Snack

Just a little herbal tea as mentioned in Juicing for Life: A Guide to the Benefits of Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Juicing. I chose chamomile tea.

Words of caution: Diabetics should seek a doctors approval before trying a juice fast. You can fast from 1 to 5 days anytime you like, but if you fast for longer than 5 days, I recommend you seek a heath care professionals supervision.

Watch for my next article on Day 2, lunch and dinner.

Thanks for visiting Prime Juicers and remember, “There’s no-thing better for your body than fresh fruit and vegetable juice!”

Breville 800JEXL Juice Fountain

This is one of the best juicers available on the market today. I’ve read  a lot about juicers and I’ve read a lot of reviews, and this is an exceptional juicer. It’s not overpriced and it’s highly recommended by purchasers.  You can usually pick up a used one or remanufactured one at a good discount too. The Breville 800 JEXL juicer is one of the highest rated with 1,580 customer reviews and a solid 4.5 star rating. You can view this juicer and more in my Amazon Associate Store or go directly to Amazon —> Breville 800JEXL Juice Fountain Elite 1000-Watt Juice Extractor

Product Description

The Breville 800JEXL Juice Fountain Elite with 1000 watts is super efficient. This model has an Italian made electronic motor that increases power under yield to maintain filter revolutions. It has two speeds for soft and hard fruits and a three inch feed tube which minimizes preparation and feeding time. Beautifully designed stainless die cast steel housing and motor body makes it a work of art on the countertop. While juicing, you may notice juice escaping between the plastic juicer cover and the stainless steel filter bowl surround. Try pushing the Food Pusher down more slowly and using the low speed. When large quantities of fruits and vegetables, especially those with high water content such tomatoes and watermelon, are fed into the Feed Chute at a rapid rate, the stainless steel filter basket coverts these into juice so quickly that the force may cause leaking.

If you have this juicer, what are your thoughts on it?

5This juicer is perfect if you’re like me………………

By Toast

We want to juice quickly and get on with our day.

I’m not a vegan, i’m not a juicing purist, or is interested in the centrifugal vs masticating debate. I just want to increase my health by drinking one big glass of fresh juice and get on with my life.

I’ve owned other juicers, but this one is a monster. At high speed, it’s loud no doubt, but it’s power is without equal. I make a monster glass of juice (close to a quart) with 7 fruits and vegetables. It rips through all of them as if it were a joke. All the vegetables take about a minute, then i’m done.

Now cleaning does take much longer than juicing, but the machine is made so well, that it’s incredibly easy. It also works out perfect for me, because while i’m slowly consuming my juice, I wash out the parts by hand. You may think this machine is a lot of money, but if you want to have a juicer with real speed and a strong motor, this is the way to go. Not only that, but it’s very attractive to look at as well. This is money well spent in my opinion, and i’m glad I took the advice of other customers on this website.

Amazing Quercetin In Apples

protein, granny smith appleI use apples in almost all of my juice recipes. I also eat apples raw, stewed and baked. There are so many different kinds and so many flavors, I’ll never get tired of them. One of my favorites is the Granny Smith Apple. It’s crisp, juicy, has freckled green skin, is sweetly tart and excellent for juicing. It also contains less sugar than red (gala) apples. It’s grown in New Zealand, Australia, California and Arizona so usually available year-round. Refrigerated storage time: 240 days. Wow!

Benefits Of Quercetin

Here are some potential benefits of quercetin. Quercetin may help fight cell-damaging free radicals and quercetin is a flavonoid that may stave off viruses when the body is under stress. Flavonoids give color to many fruits, flowers and vegetables. Quercetin may also significantly improve the symptoms associated with two forms of prostatitis, chronic nonbacterial prostatitis and prostadynia. When consumed, it acts as an antioxidant in the body.

The apple contains a high concentration of quercetin at approximately 440mg/kg and apples are very common in juicing recipes. The consumption of apples give the body a boost of antioxidants. It’s well known that antioxidants rid the body of free radicals that damage cells and cause health issues such as heart disease, cancer and premature aging.

Here’s a delicious recipe: Apple Fresh

Serves 2 people

  • 3 apples (granny smith)

  • 1 cup of red grapes

  • 1/2 lemon (peeled)

I enjoy adding an apple to my green juices, it just makes them more palatable for me. I only have to wash and slice them in half, then juice. It’s so easy. I also love the taste of fresh apple juice by it’s self and I think you’ll agree with me that it’s a beneficially amazing fruit. So get your apples out and ready to juice. Juice to your health!

Apple, Beet, Pear Fruit Juice Recipe

UPDATE: The Apple, Beet, Pear Fruit Juice recipe comes from The Juicing Bible. Most of my recipes come from books I’ve purchased and some come from a FREE juice suggestion software program. I modify the recipes for my taste and you can too!

I also find recipes online and some get sent to me by fellow bloggers and followers. Whenever possible I credit the source.

apple, beet, pear fruit juiceFresh Juice: Apple, Beet, Pear Fruit Juice Recipe

As I said, this recipe (apple, beet, pear) comes from the book, The Juicing Bible. I really have enjoyed this book and use it for reference quite frequently. So if you can, I recommend you have a copy for yourself. Here’s the Apple, Beet, Pear recipe with a slight modification (remove lemon peel) of my own. Actually the book does mention to remove the lemon peel in another chapter, but I want to make it a point in this recipe. Leave as much of the pith (white stuff) as possible. As with other citrus fruit, the pith contains pectin and bioflavonoids, which help the body to absorb vitamin C. I find lemon peel too bitter for my taste, especially when juiced in the Omega J8004 Masticating Juicer.

This is a delicious recipe and I love the bit of foam on top. On this recipe anyway.

Before juicing I didn’t like fresh beets, but juicing has really expanded my taste. I love raw, fresh beet juice now.

This is a simple recipe and very enjoyable to make. Try it, you’ll like it!

Serves 2 people

  • 2 apples

  • 1 pear

  • 3 beets (small to medium, with tops)

  • 1/2 lemon (peeled)

  • 1/2 inch piece of ginger root (optional)

apple, beet, pear fruit juice

I start with the ginger root, then the lemon and after those have gone through I process the rest in my juicer. My reason to start with the ginger root and lemon is that I want to get all that I can out of it, since it’s such a tiny amount. I think juicing them first will allow the rest, as it pushes through, to capture any residual ginger root and lemon left in the auger.

Some people like to juice the lemon last because it helps clean and freshen the juicer parts. Personal preference I suppose. As I see it there’s really no right way or wrong way when it comes to this. Experiment and enjoy.

If you have a juice recipe you’d like to share with me, please contact me. I’ll be sure to give credit where credit is due. As always, thanks for reading and happy juicing!

Zen Dragonfly | Spinach, Lettuce, Pear, Apple, Strawberry Juice

The Zen Dragonfly comes from the book The Healthy Juicer’s Bible written by Farnoosh Brock. I highly recommend this wonderful juicing book. It has many delicious recipes.

Zen Dragonfly

Do you like strawberries in your juices? If so, that’s great, because The Zen Dragonfly consists of 8-10 strawberries. I was a little hesitant to add strawberries to this green juice, but it turned out very well.

I’m always a little cautious to put anything other than apple and/or pear into my green juices, but Farnoosh knows what she’s making here.

You can just taste the strawberries and it gives it a very good flavor. I also detected the delicious taste of the Granny Smith apple.

This drink also has a beautiful green color. You can’t go wrong here. Gorgeous, Tasty and Nutritious!

 Zen Dragonfly

Makes approximately 20 ounces

  • 2-3 cups baby or regular spinach

  • A small head of Romaine lettuce ( I used 5 or 6 big leaves)

  • 1 medium pear

  • 1 medium Granny Smith apple

  • 8-10 strawberries (sometimes mine aren’t the sweetest, but I got lucky this time)

Zen Dragonfly

Update: Buy organic strawberries or grow them yourself. Strawberries are known to be one of the most highly pesticide sprayed fruits. One report found 36 types of pesticides on strawberries. Out-of-season, imported strawberries are the most risky. But organic or homegrown strawberries are healthy. They are among the fruits and vegetables ranked highest in health-promoting antioxidants.

Thank you again for reading and please let me know what you think of this recipe by commenting below. I try to keep the recipes simple.

Let"s Talk Juicing and Fiber!

Does juicing concentrate the sugar and eliminate the fiber? Yes. But first, sugars in fruit are naturally occurring sugars including fructose. Fructose has traditionally been regarded as a healthy sugar.

When you drink FRESH all natural juice the fructose is absorbed from the intestines and is taken to the liver to be broken down into glucose. Fructose has the lowest glycemic index (GI = 19) of all the natural sugars.

We want to be careful though (especially if you’re diabetic or have a history of diabetes in your family, so please consult a physician if this is the case). Juicing and consuming too much fruit at one time can overwhelm the body’s capacity to process fructose and spike your blood sugar. That’s not what we want.

Too much of any one thing (fruit juice) is bad, so we want to juice a variety. I strive for sensible juicing. Green juice is nutritionally the best for us.

Did you know fiber helps our bodies maintain normal sugar levels? So we want to get plenty of fiber in our diets.

Juicing and Fiber, Really???breville je98xl review

Unless you’re strictly juicing for the benefit of the juice (nutrients) being absorbed on an empty stomach (and lots of people do that), then I say, feel free to snack on the produce.

(When you’re cleansing or juice fasting, you don’t want fiber.)

When I feel like it, I snack on the produce. I say to myself, “Man those apples look good”, so I take a bite. “That spinach looks fresh”, so I have some. “Those carrots are awesome”, you get the idea. Munch on what you’re juicing. It’s that simple. You can make a good raw food meal out of it and that’s good for you!

Juicing usually doesn’t extract all of the fiber either. Depending on the type of juicer you use and the produce you’re juicing, you may find pulp (fiber) in your juice. If you want, you can add a little more pulp back into the juice you make. I like pulp in my orange juice. Some people don’t and that’s fine. It’s a personal preference.

You get fiber you need from the meals you eat throughout the day. How much fiber do you need? According to WHFoods website, you should strive for 25 grams of fiber each day. Check out their dietary fiber page, the links are below. For breakfast I enjoy oatmeal after I have my juice. Sometimes, just almonds. Both are good in fiber.

For a snack I have an apple, banana or an orange and maybe some more nuts. At lunch I enjoy salads. Mid-afternoon I snack on some more almonds. There you go, more fiber.

At dinner I enjoy steamed or lightly cooked vegetables and sometimes beans or legumes. I’ll also try to have some more fruit.

When juicing regularly if I eat healthy whole foods with my meals and snack on whole foods like fruit or almonds, I get plenty of fiber.

It’s something to consider each day though and just to be sure you’re getting the fiber you need, you can check out WHFoods Food Advisor. It’s a helpful tool.

So when someone says to you, what about fiber? You have the answer and remember you can tell them, “There’s No-Thing Better For Your Body Than FRESH Fruit and Vegetable Juice!”  Have fun juicing and juice on!

Apple Blues | Apple and Blueberry Juice Recipe

Apple Blues is a delicious fruit juice recipe that I got from The Big Book of Juices. This is quickly becoming my favorite book for recipes.

Apple Blues is so simple, combining the sweet flavor of apples with the nutritious benefit of blueberries. And, who doesn’t like blueberries?

apple bluesApple Blues

I made this juice in the morning for us to have with a light breakfast (other fruit and almonds). I was pleasantly surprised by the sweetness of this juice and the fiber. I’m using my Omega J8004 juicer with most of these recipes and this juice has some fiber to it. We thoroughly enjoyed our little breakfast together and especially Apple Blues, which brightened our morning.

 Makes 20 ounces

  • 3 apples

  • 2 large handfuls of blueberries

Juicing Myth: Juicing Is Bad

Here’s a juicing myth for you: “Juicing is bad because you lose the fiber when you juice fruits and vegetables.” – You get fiber through many other foods. You can also add back in some of the pulp to your juice. I’m not saying just Juicing Fruits and Vegetablesjuice. I’m saying juice in moderation to supplement your body with the vitamins and nutrients it needs from fresh fruits and vegetables. Your meals should also include lightly cooked vegetables, raw fruit and legumes.

Banana Sorbet With the Omega J8006 Juicer

banana sorbet

Banana sorbet! What??? Yeah, one of the benefits of the Omega J8006 juicer is that it can do a variety of other things. Making frozen sorbet is one.

Banana Sorbet

If you have a sweet tooth try making banana sorbet with your Omega masticating juicer. Whether it’s an Omega J8004 or J8006 it will make ice cream (sorbet) for you. The other Omega models will too. These juicers are a great value and you can get free shipping through Amazon. Prime membership entitles you to free two day shipping also. What a great deal!

With bananas it’s simple to do and bananas are not only delicious, but good for you. They are packed with potassium. We all need potassium.

Banana-Fruit

A banana is an edible fruit, botanically a berry, produced by several kinds of large herbaceous flowering plants in the genus Musa. Wikipedia

Peel your bananas ahead of time and put them in the freezer (ziploc bag). After they have had time to freeze, take them out and run them through your Omega juicer. Use the blank cone that came with the juicer and not the juicing screen. After you’ve run the bananas through it’s time to enjoy your sorbet. Fresh from the juicer is best!

Try this: between bananas, run a fresh frozen strawberry through the juicer for a banana strawberry dessert. Delicious!

Here’s a recipe right from the manual:

Banana Sorbet- Banana Berry

2 or 3 bananas (peeled)

6 to 12 berries (no stems)

Place items in a zip lock bag. Place items in the freezer overnight. It is helpful to cut the bananas into smaller pieces before freezing. Place the frozen pieces into the juicer. The result is an ice cream or frozen yogurt-type dessert. You may run the items through multiple times to increase the creaminess.

Have you tried adding plain yogurt?

Choosing The Best Juicer

Breville 800JEXL Juice Fountain

Breville JE98XL Juicer

I didn’t choose my first juicer, it was a gift. My son gave me a juicer for Father’s day and I started using it that same day. It was exciting! I remember running down to the grocery store and buying a bunch of fruits and vegetables. When I got home I started juicing for my son and my girlfriend, Virginia. I didn’t even think about the types of juicers or which one was better and what the differences were.

Buying a Juicer

So if you don’t have a juicer and plan on buying one, read on. Get the best one you can afford, and don’t worry about it if it’s not what the “experts” want you to buy. Bottom line: The important thing is that you actually start juicing. I like off-roading, sometimes called “wheeling”, and a guy I know says, “Doesn’t matter what rig you’re driving (Jeep, Toyota, Hummer), just matters that you’re out there wheeling.” I like that and I’ll apply that to juicing. “It doesn’t matter what type you buy, it just matters that you’re juicing.” Juicing is good for your overall health and you won’t be sorry you started!

Centrifugal and Masticating Juicers

Basically there are two types of juicers you need to know about for juicing at home (I want to keep it simple). One type of juicer is a centrifugal juicer like the Breville JE98XL Juice Fountain Plus, pictured above. Most juicers sold are this type. These are usually the least expensive and do a good job. Some are loud, but tolerable. They juice things  fast and are pretty easy to clean. They do a good job on hard fruit and vegetables like apples, carrots and even cucumbers. I think they do well juicing oranges, pineapple and strawberries too. I can put entire small apple into mine. It can take a handful of spinach and two or three carrots at the same time too. You can’t do that with the next type, which is the masticating juicer.

omega j8006

Omega J8006

The second type is a masticating juicer. Like the Omega J8006 Nutrition Center Juicer , pictured right. Sometimes these are called a low speed juicer or slow juicer. They do a great job of juicing things like greens, kale, wheatgrass and spinach, unlike the centrifugal. So if you think you’re going to be juicing a lot of leafy greens, choose one like this.

The slow juicer crushes and squeezes the produce through a screen or filter and this forces the juice out. This supposedly squeezes out more enzymes, vitamins and trace minerals and doesn’t damage them in the process. Since it does it slowly, it doesn’t heat up the juice. Honestly, I can’t tell if the speed of the centrifugal heats up the juice more or not. I haven’t taken its temperature 😆 . People claim that a slow juicer keeps the enzymes and nutrients at a temperature that they can survive at and it squeezes out more of them. I don’t know of any studies proving this, but I like the concept.

The other advantage to a masticating juicer is that the pulp it creates is very dry. Proponents of this type say it gets 20% more juice out of the produce than a centrifugal juicer, so you’ll save money in the long run by using it. I can attest to the slow juicer getting more juice out of my produce. That’s a fact, especially since I juice a lot of leafy greens. It can also do other things like pasta, grind coffee, make natural baby food and natural nut butter. Pretty cool, eh?

A third kind is the the twin gear triturating juicers. These are expensive, hard to clean and I don’t think appealing for everyday juicing. Not for the beginner in my opinion. Let’s keep it simple and you can forget about the twin gear for now.

Centrifugal juicers run between $45 and $300. Masticating juicers run between $231 and $379. Basically you’ll be choosing between these two types.

My suggestion is to look at the two mentioned above and less expensive one, the Hamilton Beach 67601A Big Mouth Juice Extractor, pictured below.

So what do I use most often? The Omega J8004 Nutrition Center Commercial Masticating Juicer. I got a good deal on it. It’s just like the Omega J8006 Nutrition Center Juicer, but in white.

OmegaJ8004

Omega J8004

I like the masticating juicer because it does a great job with leafy greens. It’s pretty quiet, and it’s easy to clean. The The Omega J8004 also produces great tasting juice. I don’t know if it’s my imagination or not, but it seems to taste better and last longer than juice made with my centrifugal. I can also make sorbet!

Be sure to visit my Juicers page. There are more options there. For around $350 you could get an Omega VRT350 Heavy Duty Dual-Stage Vertical Single Auger Low Speed Juicer. I hear these are excellent and it’s what I’m going to get next.

Remember: There’s no-thing better for your body than FRESH fruit and vegetable juice! So JUICE ON!

Quick and Dirty Flu Fighter | Orange, Grapefruit, Lemon, Apple and Ginger Fruit Juice

It doesn’t have to be the flu season to enjoy the Quick and Dirty Flu Fighter fresh fruit juice. This recipe comes from one of my favorite juicing books, The Healthy Juicer’s Bible by Farnoosh Brock. This is an excellent book for both the beginner and experienced juicer.

Note: drink juice in moderate amounts. The high sugar content of fruit juices can cause tooth decay and the high acid content can wear away enamel if consumed in excess. Please remember, if you’re diabetic, have a serious medical condition or take medication please check with your healthcare professional. Oranges have a lot of sugar in the juice and grapefruit juice doesn’t mix with some medications. It only takes a phone call to check.

How to Juice Wheatgrass

After I bought my Omega J8004 I couldn’t wait to juice wheatgrass. I only had it a week and even though it’s still freezing outdoors I started growing a tray inside. But what’s the best way to juice wheatgrass?

I’ve seen people juice wheatgrass by its’self and take shots, and I’ve also seen people juice wheatgrass with something sweet, like pineapple.

juice wheatgrassIf you’re familiar with wheatgrass juice then you know it’s strong. I’ve taken shots of it, but I really prefer to mix it with something sweet. Therefore, I suggest if you’re juicing wheatgrass for the first time try it with something sweet.

Juice Wheatgrass: Shots

I like to juice wheatgrass with lime and take it in a shot. It only takes three or four handfuls of wheatgrass with a quarter of a lime (washed, unpeeled) and that does just fine. I also like juicing wheatgrass with apple. One apple and again, only three or four handfuls of wheatgrass. Experiment! Find a simple recipe you like.

Wheatgrass is great for the body and I also really enjoy growing it. Refer back to my first post on wheatgrass, the ABC’s Of Juicing Wheatgrass: Benefits Of Wheatgrass and my second post How To Grow Wheatgrass For Juicing.

Please, if you’re doing it for the first time, take it slow and consume only a little (1 oz. or less) the first few times if you’re doing it in shots. Try it once a day for a few days. Wheatgrass has a strong cleansing effect and may make you nauseous if you drink too much. If you have a wheat or grass allergy or any health concerns, please consult a heath care professional first.

Juice Wheatgrass With The Omega J8004

Okay, this is how I juice wheatgrass with my Omega J8004 juicer. I  suggest you grow your own wheatgrass, but if that’s out of the question you could buy fresh wheatgrass in a store or a farmers market.

(On a side note, I’m experimenting as I write this with growing sprouts for juicing. I’ll update you later.)

If you grow your own wheatgrass indoors you shouldn’t need to rinse it, unless you see some fine mold at the roots. If you see some mold at the roots then definitely rinse it off before juicing.

Using my Omega J8804 juicer I put a small handful of wheatgrass down the chute. It self feeds, but sometimes needs a little help. Take it easy,  you don’t need to put too much in the juicer at once.

After the wheatgrass I juice something like a quarter lime. Lime and wheatgrass go together great. I’ll do it in a shot and juice enough for another shot or two during the day. I save my surplus wheatgrass juice in a mason jar, tightly sealed and kept in the refrigerator. I don’t keep it for longer than a day.

That’s all there is to it! It’s loaded with minerals, protein, amino acids and vitamins. I always get a boost in energy when taking wheatgrass.

Here’s a great video showing how it’s done with the Omega J8004. I like her recipe too.

Here are a couple of more recipes:

Diplomatic Immunity

3 carrots

1 stalk of celery

1/2 beet with the greens

1/2 handful of wheatgrass

1/2 handful of parsley

1 apple
The Great Grassy Punch (The Healthy Juicers Bible)

14 oz. of wheatgrass organically grown

1 granny smith apple

A small piece of ginger

Yields 2 shot glasses

.

.

As I said, when you juice wheatgrass it is strong, so start slow. I use just a few small handfuls (bunches) at a time. I’ll say this again too, if you drink too much at one time (straight shots) it could make you nauseous. Let your body get used to it. Try it in one of the above recipes or with a little lime or an apple. Do you need more wheatgrass recipes?

Thanks for reading and happy juicing!

Seasonal: Green Carrot Ginger Juice | Reboot With Joe

reboot with joeGreen Carrot Ginger Juice

Ingredients:
2″ (5 cm) of ginger root (you may add more ginger if you like)

1 medium cucumber

4 carrots

3 stalks kale (Tuscan cabbage)

1/2 pear

This recipe comes to you via the Reboot With Joe website. I love visiting his website and getting new juicing recipes. Also featured on Reboot With Joe, are people with inspirational stories. It just makes me want to juice every day and twice on Sundays.

Drinking cucumber juice helps you reach your recommended daily intake of vitamin K (Kale also has plenty of vitamin K). This vitamin helps you build strong bone tissue and nourishes your kidneys. It also plays an important role in blood clotting — it activates proteins that trigger blood coagulation, so that you can stop bleeding after suffering tissue damage. Consuming cucumber juice helps to fight the effects of vitamin K deficiency, which can include nosebleeds, bruising and bleeding gums.

Another great source of recipes is a book I have called, The Juicing Bible. It has a lot of fantastic recipes and so much good information about juicing and healthy food. It’s an awesome book and if you’re juicing regularly, it’s a must read.
