How Do I Get Protein During My Juice Fast?
I hear that question often, and many people say to me they need to get their protein. I imagine the majority of people don’t know how they can possibly supply their body with enough protein while consuming only FRESH fruit & vegetable JUICE. There are many excellent raw sources of protein. See below.
Not getting enough protein while juice fasting is a legitimate concern. Getting enough of any food source is important and protein is something our bodies require to thrive. Fret not people, raw, plant-based protein absolutely provides a person with more than enough protein to nourish the body. Ask any true Vegan!
Juicing
When juicing regularly or juice fasting you’re not starving your body. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. Your body is getting more nutrition that it’s probably ever received. Juicing breaks down the cells and concentrates the nutrients allowing your body to absorb more. You wouldn’t be able to eat even half of the raw fruits and vegetables you’ll be consuming on a juice fast. It’s just too much to chew and swallow.
Here’s a list of several raw sources of protein you can juice: Asparagus, Beet Greens, Broccoli, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Collard Greens, Kale, Mustard Greens, Spinach, Swiss Chard, Sprouts, Tomatoes and Turnip Greens. (Source)
Protein Levels
From LIVESTRONG.COM:
Blood protein levels remain constant throughout a prolonged juice diet. Proteins are synthesized from decomposed cells, notes Germany’s “fasting therapist”, Dr. Otto Buchinger, who founded several European health clinics. New cell growth is enhanced during a juice diet, as the body shifts protein and other stored nutrients to where they are needed. After a few days of consuming only liquids, your body will “autolyze,” or self-digest, cells and tissues which are diseased, damaged, aging or dead. The process has been called “a burning of rubbish” by Buchinger in his book, “Fasting: the Buchinger Method.”
Using a juice extractor unlocks essential nutrients in the fibers of fruits and vegetables, notes Ron Lagerquist, author of “Fasting to Freedom” and “Whole Foods & Healing Recipes.” Lagerquist maintains that a juice diet provides better rejuvenation than fasting on water, which often causes an unpleasant toxic crisis.
I do not promote long term juice fasts of 30 days or more. 5 to 7 days is sufficient for me. Ask your doctor if adding fresh juice to your diet would be appropriate for you.
