Welcome to Wrightsville Beach Magazine

We are often reminded of the importance of eating our vegetables, but it is difficult to put down the chocolate and pick up the broccoli.
Growing up some of us tried to get away with sneaking vegetables to the dog, even though mom and dad lectured away about spinach for our muscles and carrots for our eyes.
I was not big on eating vegetables but found juicing to be the magic bullet for my health, energy, and vitality, says Rick Civelli, owner of Wrightsville Beach Surf Camp and Surfberry.
For those unable to stomach chewing large portions of beets or rutabagas, juicing could be an alternate route for ingesting natural vitamins and minerals.
Thats the main benefit of juicing the immediate absorption of nutrients. You feel on a nutrient high within the first 15 to 20 minutes after drinking them, says Stephanie Davis of Paulas Health Hut. Another nutritional goldmine in juiced produce is the enzymes they carry.

Nutrition Redefined Through Rawism And Juicing

Fundamentally speaking, people have always wondered what is so special about eating raw foods as opposed to cooking it and adding flavor enhancements to it.  In order to tackle raw food diet’s many perks, you should understand some basic concepts about raw food and see how the process of cooking inherently takes away from the exceptional nutritional value of raw foods.  We’ve broken our factual raw food piece into sections that explain why you’d benefit from rawism as opposed to destroying nutrition in a pan.  Keep in mind we’re not including cannibalistic foods such as raw meat into our conversation as eating most raw meats can cause serious internal injury.

Let’s Start Juicing!

We decided on the Breville Multi-Speed Juice Fountain since Breville was the brand used in the documentary and all Breville models seem to have amazing reviews online.  It says the retail price is $199 but I found it on Amazon for $50 less!  Keep in mind that prices fluctuate daily on Amazon, so the price might rise or drop by the day.

How to start juicing for your health – what type of juicer to use

I’ve recently been going through a juice fast, and the most common question I received was: what kind of juicing system are you using or what kind of juicer do you recommend?  Juicing has been a big deal in our home for nearly a year now. There are many different ways that you can do the juicing process.
I’m going to talk about the two most common methods of juicing. One is more expensive than the other, but saves more money in the long run. I’m going to talk about both of these methods so that you can decide what will work best for you.

9. Juicing Diet | The Most Popular Diets of 2012 (According to Google) | TIME.com

Kale-ginger-beet-goji berry juice anyone? This year, Americans were filling up on veggie juices for “juice cleanses” lasting three days or more. There is no shortage of juicing books and the juice industry is still booming. Even Starbucks joined the craze by buying luxe juicemaker Evolution Fresh for $30 million. The idea behind juicing is relatively simple: the aim is to fast on pure fruit and veggie juices to detox and purify the body to feel healthier, more energized and perhaps a couple pounds lighter.

Stanford Cancer Center - Juicing Recipes

The best selection of juices comes in nature's own containers: fresh fruits & vegetables.  Fresh juice is loaded with cancer-fighting phytochemicals and vitamins, in a state easily absorbed by the body.
Did you know?:
  • 1 cup of carrot or celery juice provides most of the same nutrients found in 5 cups of those same vegetables chopped up.
To begin juicing, you'll need a juice extractor.
  • For those who don't have one but looking to get one - there are so many versions sold at department stores from $20-$300.
  • High tech features (such as the ability to process whole, uncut fruits) are worth the extra money if you are a frequent juicer.  Otherwise, a basic model will do.

Juicing Yams?? Juicing Yams!!! « Rachel Scott Yoga

Yammy Yumminess
  • 1 yam (small)
  • 2 carrots
  • 2 stalks celery
  • 1 lemon
  • slice ginger
Now, to date, this is the most delicious, sweet juice that I have made.  Given the name, I should have figured that sweet potatoes would be, well…sweet, but I was still surprised.  (What is the difference between a yam and a sweet potato, anyway?)  The yammy juice was on the thicker side, giving this juice just the tiniest bit more heft than other juices.  The lemon and ginger went in for a splash of zing, the celery so that I didn’t feel completely non-green, and away we went.

Juicing - Facts & Benefits

A glass of raw juice is the best " multivitamin/mineral supplement " money can buy. If you are concerned that you are not getting all the nutrients out of raw fruits and vegetables that you need, or you are just beginning to change your diet and want to increase your healing rate, drink at least a glass of raw juice daily. A 4-8 ounce glass of raw fruit or vegetable juice is like gold to your body. It provides not only all of the healing nutrients that have been isolated, but also all of those that man has yet to discover. It provides them in their living, organic, alkaline, whole, complete, balanced form. It is important to remember that juicing has a concentrating effect on the nutrients in fruits and vegetables. A glass of juice can (and should) be considered to be a meal in itself.

Let's Talk Juicing And FIBER!

Jay Kordich PGP001
Juicing concentrates the sugars and eliminates the fiber, right? First, sugars in fruit are naturally occurring sugars including fructose. Fructose has traditionally been regarded as a healthy sugar because it does not raise blood sugar levels.  When you drink FRESH all natural juice the fructose is absorbed from the intestines and is taken to the liver to be broken down into glucose. Because of this fructose has the lowest glycemic index of all the natural sugars. We want to be careful though (especially if you're diabetic or have a history of diabetes in your family, so please consult a physician if this is the case). Juicing too many fruits at one time and getting that much fructose can overwhelm the body's capacity to precess it. But, we already know not to juice just fruits and root vegetables and to juice a variety. The green juice is nutritionally the best for us. But, did you know fiber helps our bodies maintain normal sugar levels? So we want to get lots of fiber. How do we get fiber? Simple, you can get a little of the fiber you need by adding a some pulp back into the juice you make and another way is to eat some of the produce you're juicing. I say to myself, "Man those apples look good", so I take a bite. "That spinach looks fresh", so I chew some. "Those carrots are awesome", you get the idea. Munch on what you're juicing! It's that simple! You'll also get the fiber you need from the meals you eat throughout the day. How much fiber do you need? According to WHFoods website, you should strive for 25 grams of fiber each day. Check out their dietary fiber page, the links are below. For breakfast I almost always have oatmeal with my juice. Oatmeal is good fiber. For a snack I have an apple, banana or an orange and maybe some nuts. At lunch I almost always have a salad and some fruit. Mid-afternoon snack some almonds and some fruit. There you go again, more fiber. At dinner, it's steamed or lightly cooked vegetables and beans or legumes and you guessed it, some more fruit. I believe if I eat some of what I'm juicing and then have some grains, cereals, nuts, fruits, vegetables, beans and legumes for snacks and meals, I'll get plenty of fiber. It's something to consider each day though and just to be sure you're getting the fiber you need, you can check out WHFoods Food Advisor. It's a helpful tool. So when someone says to you, what about fiber? You have the answer and remember you can tell them, "There's No-Thing Better For Your Body Than FRESH Fruit and Vegetable Juice!" Have fun juicing and Juice On!

Choose Your Juicer Type

When I got started juicing it was easy. My son gave me a juicer for Father's day and I started using it immediately. I remember running down to the grocery store and buying a bunch of fruits and vegetables. When I got home I started juicing for my son and my girlfriend. I didn't even think about the types of juicers or which one was better and what the differences are. So if you don't have a juicer and plan on buying one, take my advice. Get the best one you can afford, but don't worry about it if it's not what the "experts" say is what you need. The important thing is that you actually start juicing. I like off-roading, sometimes called "wheeling", and a guy I know says, "Doesn't matter what rig you're driving (Jeep, Toyota, Hummer), just matters that you're out there wheeling." I like that and I'll apply that to juicing. So whatever type you get just use it and juice. You won't be sorry!
Breville BJE200XL

Okay, basically there are two types of juicers you need to know about for juicing at home. One type of juicer is a centrifugal juicer and most juicers sold are this type. This is the least expensive and does the job. They are loud, but tolerable. The second type is a masticating juicer. Sometimes these are called a low speed juicer. They do a good job of juicing things like greens, wheatgrass and spinach. But check into it, because some say they don't do grass :-) These masticating juicers chew the fibers and breaks up the cells of vegetables and fruits. This gives you more fiber, enzymes, vitamins and trace minerals. It can do other things too like pasta, grind coffee, make natural baby food and natural peanut butter out of peanuts. Pretty cool, eh? And then there are the twin gear triturating juicers which are expensive, hard to clean and I don't think appealing for everyday juicing. However, they are even better at getting the good stuff out. It's a two stage process. The first stage crushes the fruits and vegetables, while the second stage presses the juice. There are conflicting reports of which one gets you the most juice out of your produce. Some say the centrifugal will get the most volume of juice and some say otherwise. Who knows exactly what they're referring too. I believe the winner is the masticating and triturating. For sure the twin gear (triturating) will probably require less produce to make juice than the centrifugal. Because the twin gear actually crushes AND presses. My centrifugal gets a lot of juice out of my produce. The pulp is pretty dry when I take it to the compost can. I'm sure it depends on the quality of the juicer and the way you juice.I know if I slow down and don't rush my juicer I get better results.

Centrifugal juicers run between $45 and $300. Single gear masticating juicers run between $229 and $379 on my PRIME Juicers aStore site and the twin gear (triturating), well lets say they start around $500 and run into the thousands of dollars. If you're like me, budget is a concern. So basically you'll be choosing between the centrifugal and the masticating. Remember: I said the triturating are hard to clean (hint, hint).

So what would my choice be? Right now I'll stick with what I'm using. I like the centrifugal because it does the job. It doesn't take up much room, it's quick and it's easy to clean up afterwards. The centrifugal will also take bigger chunks of fruits and vegetables too, making it easier for me. If I want to start making pasta, coffee, peanut butter and God forbid baby food someday, I'd spring for a nice masticating juicer. There's no-thing better for your body than FRESH fruit and vegetable juice! So JUICE ON!

Beautiful Benefits of Juicing Cucumbers

Breville RM-JE98XL

Breville Remanufactured JE98XL.

Juicing fresh fruits and vegetables will deliver to your body the vitamins you need. Cucumber juice is one such example, providing key nutrients and other health benefits --- and it can even assist you in weight loss. Cucumber are a good source of B vitamins and cucumbers contain 95% water. They help keep your body hydrated and help your body eliminate toxins. I've heard claims that cucumber juice is even more beneficial in hydrating your body than water, but don't forget to drink plenty of water throughout the day. Water is essential for your overall health. Cucumber is also known to be good for your skin and hair. That's why many of the beauty products claim to contain cucumber. In addition, cucumber are known to contain lariciresinol, pinoresinol, and secoisolariciresinol. Research shows these three lignans have a connection with reduced risk of several cancer types, including breast cancer, ovarian cancer, uterine cancer and prostate cancer. Cucumber is also known to be good for diabetics and to lower cholesterol levels. So if you want more energy, to get rid of toxins, lower your cholesterol and have beautiful hair and skin, then you should be putting some cucumber in your juice. Have fun juicing and cheers to your health!

Amazing Quercetin In Apples

Breville BJE200XL

Potential benefits of quercetin are that it may help fight cell-damaging free radicals. Quercetin is a flavonoid that may stave off viruses when the body is under stress. Flavonoids give color to many fruits, flowers and vegetables. Quercetin may significantly improve the symptoms associated with two forms of prostatitis, chronic nonbacterial prostatitis and prostadynia. When consumed, quercetin acts as an antioxidant in the body.

The apple contains a high concentration of quercetin at approximately 440mg/kg and apples are very common in juicing recipes. The consumption of apples give the body a boost of antioxidants. It is well known that antioxidants rid the body of free radicals that damage cells and cause health issues such as heart disease, cancer and premature aging. So get your apples out and juice to your health!

5 Quick Tips for Juicing Fruits And Vegetables

Here are some juicing tips:

1. Add some fruit to your greens to sweeten it up a bit and smooth out the taste. Personally, I use just a half of an apple sometimes. It makes the juice more refreshing and boosts the vitamin and mineral content of my green juice.

2. Use the freshest produce and use organic if possible. I know not everyone has access to organic produce, but it really is better for you. Organic produce will be pesticide and chemically free. Using the freshest will make a difference also. The fresher the produce the healthier and tastier your drinks will be. If you have access to a farmers market, use it. You won't be sorry!

3. Leave the skins on when you juice. That's where a lot of the nutritional value is. I don't leave the entire rind on my oranges. I use a peeler to do it quickly, but leave a little rind on for the benefit. Apples, carrots and the like I don't peel at all. Cucumbers, it just depends. Do it the way that suits YOU. Have fun and enjoy it. When juicing lemons I'll also leave a little rind on. My girlfriend likes me to remove the green leaves off of strawberries because it changes the taste. I can' really tell though.

4. Use a variety of ingredients. It's best not to juice just fruits, because that could end up being a lot of sugar and if you're diabetic, please consult your physician before juicing fruits. Work toward drinking as much green juice as you can. The greens are nutritionally the best for you. The fruits and root vegetables are especially good for a good energy boost. Just be careful about how much of them you juice.

5. Always, ALWAYS wash and scrub your fruits and vegetables. Not just because of chemicals and pesticide, but because it's been handled by others. Buy a vegetable brush from my aStore. It'll make you feel good :-)

I hope this helps and remember have fun juicing!
